She's known more widely as a comedienne (and understandably so!), but I personally prefer her in dramas - Reds, Mrs. Soffel, Shoot the Moon, Looking for Mr. Goodbar... What's your choice?

Looking For Mr Goodbar.
I always saw her as a WASP-ish lightweight in a lot of other things (even though that was clearly by design in The Godfather) best suited to comedy, but that was the first time I was really impressed by her dramatic chops as an actress.

Favorite? Oh, quite easily this because well, you have to be able to do comedy....that rule doesn't just apply to the male actors dammit!

Looking for Mr. Goodbar is probably my favorite, but man, I think I love her in just about anything she does. Even if the film is bad, she rarely is, and I think she's got such a fantastic energy and magnetism that few others can match.

Honestly it's Annie Hall, but I'm gonna give a shout-out to some performances of hers that I like that don't get enough credit.
Manhattan Murder Mystery Baby Boom The Family Stone Morning Glory

pacinoyes - *Ahem* What do you think is her best performance? Well her best performance was probably convincing this loudmouth midget that she dated for almost 20 years that she somehow didn't find him annoying af. I would say that Looking For Mr. Goodbar is her most daring......... but I'll take Shoot the Moon - where she does the most with the least - where she's acting with a GOAT ( Albert Finney) level actor, doesn't have anything quirky or exotic in the portrayal and makes it real, at times heartbreaking (when she smokes the joint, one of her great scenes) and transcends just being "the ex-wife". Both of those performances are spectacular in that movie and cast a lesser actress she'd get blown of the screen by Big Al(bert). Which reminds me .............she interacted with 4 of my top few actors - ever - DePac, Nicholson, Finney and held her own if not more every time.

like a lot of her work but Reds will always have my heart. Keaton and Stapleton in that movie... there aren't enough chef's kisses Looking for Mr. Goodbar is tremendous too, and not just for Keaton's perf. The movie doesn't get enough love so it's nice to see it getting mentions in this thread

Probably Annie Hall or Manhattan.
But she's very good in the first Godfather as well and really gets dismissed there. She's the eyes of the audience and really anchors the movie. That last scene is really well handled as well, she knows Michael's lying and you can see the wheels turning with her deciding to accept it and bury it in her mind. That was a very delicate thing to handle, you could either overplay your hand and it would be too obvious or she would just come off as oblivious.
I've said before if Keaton had continued to periodically do prestige dramas post-Reds she could have had a Katharine Hepburn type career. But she says comedy is just what she likes to do.

Pretty much the only actress not named Katharine Hepburn with genius-level work in comedy and drama. My favorites are Love and Death and Shoot the Moon, for which she should've won the Oscar (she owns Streep and Lange in '82 ). Sort of a hidden gem in Mrs. Soffel, she's extremely lovely there. (She's always better than her movies). Underrated as a star too, I mean she has a face fit for Bergman and a screwball comedy at once, and you just fall in love with her every damn time...

REDS. end game.
1981 - French Lieutenant's Woman, Reds, The Postman Always Rings Twice
1982 - Sophie's Choice, Frances, Shoot the Moon
Those 3 were like America's gals during that period. Pelle you truly think Keaton in Shoot the Moon is better than Lange in Frances?

Pretty much the only actress not named Katharine Hepburn with genius-level work in comedy and drama. Barbara Stanwyck smoked Katharine on that front, IMO.

Mrs. Soffel and her performance in it have been on my cinematic mind lately... Her passion in this film is just extraordinary - her chemistry with Gibson is white-hot.

Hmm... I haven't seen Mrs. Soffel. ^ That picture is kind of hot.
I always used to rave about it on here (especially breaking down that train station scene haha) but my love still stands for her performance in Reds above all.
But...
Runner Up: Shoot the Moon Comedy: Love and Death

Hmm... I haven't seen Mrs. Soffel. ^ That picture is kind of hot. Yes, I think director Gillian Armstrong handles the sexual element very tenderly but very erotically - I find it really refreshing to see this kind of "fantasy" from a woman's point of view. I hope that makes sense!
