Paul Schrader's latest Facebook status - "Mare of Easttown has begun its decline. Winslet is still brilliant, the writing solid, the direction pedestrian but the plotting has gone to shit. Committee driven storylines with less and less connection to the characters. The finale on last night's episode was about as low as quality episodic can go." Interesting... one of the comments on his status is from an actor who said they fired the original director after 3-4 eps and then cut out characters/rewrote stuff. Gavin O'Connor would be that first director...replaced by Craig Zobel. I know Guy Pearce replaced a British actor at the last minute (I figured it was an overseas quarantine issue) so this show seems riddled by reshoots... which isn't so unusual but the show does feel a little off and unsure of itself. Idk what to think of it... Anyway, my killer prediction: Evan Peters... he drunkenly revealed being ditched by his wife without an explanation, he even looks too young as a detective so there's already this wrong feeling to him and we're starting to see with Winslet the way he can become fixated.

Episode 5: Damn. I don't think Winslet has ever been better!

Goddamn, the last 10 minutes of that episode were some of the most gripping TV I've seen in ages. Came dangerously close to straight-up copying Silence of the Lambs, but it was still masterfully executed and gave us a genuine gut-punch.
Really liking this miniseries in general. It does feel a bit overstuffed at times - I'm honestly struggling to keep track of all the characters and storylines. However, I also like how they've really made an effort to flesh out this town beyond Mare, and now I'm just hoping they bring it all together well in the last two episodes. Agreed that this may be Winslet's best work to date - she's just phenomenal.

Ep5 was better than Ep4 for sure. There goes my killer prediction Still, it likes to overpronounce character suspicion like the beer dude... and the porch scene. Some stuff/dialogue plays out not so differently from the SNL parody! My fav thing about the show is the chemistry btwn Winslet and Jean Smart who aces every moment and is quite funny... Ep5 she's great in that quick bathtub scene.

Love the hell out of this mini series thus far. Entertaining as hell filled with a bunch of twists & turns. Winslet is flat out awesome in this (been a big fan of her since Titanic) . The rest of the cast is top notch as well ( didn't even recognize Evan Peters at first ( he usually has much longer shaggy hair but in this he is clean cut) Also, I love the small town setting .
Will definitely continue to tune into this mini series .

Two episodes in. I echo people's comments on the Sharp Objects similarities. This is probaly the best that Winslet has been in a very long time, even if the accent is still a bit wobbly. The way some of this is framed/shot reminds me of a highbrow drama from the 90s, but I don't mean that in a negative way. Scenes meander, and there are several awkwardly long beats throughout. There's also something Lonergan-esque about how dryly comedic moments play out against the bleak, depressive setting.

Goddamn, another absolute nail-biter. These episodes are so jam-packed, and I still mean that as praise and as slight criticism - this show makes Game of Thrones seem small-scale. I'm mostly loving the shit out of it though, and if they pull things off with the finale (and I have confidence they will) and tie everything together, this will go down as one of the best in this age of the miniseries.

I thought the earlier therapist scenes were banal but in E6 Winslet has a heartbreaking monologue that she aces. I love how she slowly turns her head, like wanting to look away from the memory, and there's a brilliant moment when she springs her head back to forward, as if thrown back to the present, breaking off the retraced pain. Even though the show kinda forces its grief theme (and I hated that bathtub fakeout in E6), it's still moving....especially the loosened barrier btwn Winslet + Smart.
Killer question: What does the picture show!!?
Also I wanna see Winslet shoot a basketball, where's it at.

So based on episode 6, who does everyone think is the killer?
I have two theories: 1) In a WILD twist, it could be Richard 2) John Ross is the killer because he might've raped Erin, fathered her child, and killed her when she needed money for her baby's surgery

Wasn’t John the alibi for Frank though?

For someone who's not seen the show, how's Guy Pearce? He's one of my favorite actors and it sucks that he gets stuck doing those terrible low budget C grade films, so I'm hoping he's got something substantial in this show. Is another Emmy nom possible for him?

Wasn’t John the alibi for Frank though? Hmm... oh yeah. At first I thought Billy had killed Erin because John was actually the baby's father and he was trying to cover it up (especially that later scene where it looked like John was shitting bricks when Billy said he needed to confess). I think it's one of the uncles, but I wouldn't be surprised (but hope it's not) someone completely out of left field. All I know is this "fishing trip" is not going to end well.

Yeah I’m expecting one more big twist in the finale, I just hope it makes sense. Thinking Billy will kill John and Mare will kill Billy and then think things are wrapped up until someone slips or something new develops.

Upto ep.4 and really loving it so far. Winslet is so great here. But it's such a sad show about sad people. Like every single person is living such a miserable life. Thank god for scenes of Winslet and Jean Smart, they are so great together. Really looking forward to the next 3 episodes.

Okay, I'm caught up.
My theory---
Billy didn't do it but knows John did it. John had an affair with Erin and you are the father. John kills Billy and blames it on him. Mare realizes that John has no alibi based on something Frank said.
Sibohan's girlfriend dumped her because she didn't want to be responsible for her not going to Cal.
Andrew killed himself because he no longer wanted to be a burden to his family.
