They did a critics panel last week where everyone kept asking Winslet about her accent [yawn] and there's a new article today Let's Talk About Winslet's Philly Accent [yawn]. Will definitely be watching even tho the trailer looks eh-okay. I like the director (Compliance, Z for Zachariah) and the dp (1922, Beasts of Southern Wild) and the cast. Jean Smart is a tv beast especially lately, and HBO clearly loves her - she's filming another new show right now for them where she plays a comedian diva.
We have this and then Lisey's Story starring Julianne Moore soon after. Lotta our great actresses doing series bc they're smart. Who could deny the recent triumphs of Blanchett and Michelle Williams.... altho this show looks more in line with HBOs usual - True Detective/The Outsider/Sharp Objects.

When it comes to prestige-ish TV series, every major movie actress doing small screen work right now is living in the shadow of Nicole Kidman. I don't know what the fuck it is or quite how she has done it, but she's bottled some secret sauce that gets her both insane level of audience engagement and major awards recognition. Usually, it's one or the other, but rarely both. For The Undoing to be the most watched HBO series of 2020, and surpassing Kidman's previous megahit series Big Little Lies in audience numbers is crazy. She has arguably become the most dominant actress on television, after only two projects.
All that is my way of saying that I think Winslet and this show may have a hard act to follow, when it comes to creating the kind of water cooler TV that seems to come so easily for Kidman. But still, it's HBO and she has a solid track record with them for Mildred Pierce. I don't see this getting a Big Little Lies/Undoing level of audience, but it could be a solid critical hit for HBO.

Crime content is all the rage now and it's been pretty spotty. Not vibing with this trailer much but I'm sure I'll watch it.

Not sure what any of this has to do with Nicole Kidman... Winslet had already won an Emmy a full 6 years before Kidman did...
Anyway, will definitely be watching.

Getting good reviews!

Surprised a little and happy about the generally positive reviews.... the Slash critic says it may be Winslet's career best perf which is very high praise. But then there's Variety and their opening line - "It begins with the accent."

Limited Series Actress is going to be pretty interesting this year. Anya will probably still win, but she definitely has some competition.

But then there's Variety and their opening line - "It begins with the accent." It was praise! True- that's my bad, it sounds like I implied it was a negative review when it isn't. I was carrying over from my last post with how critics seem to be so obsessed with her accent in this.... that whole review is framed around it, even if it's praise. Anyway - I'm looking forward to this! Curious to see Evan Peters as well, as a detective.... he seems too young....but he's 34....

The Winslet renaissance begins!

The Winslet renaissance begins! To be fair, she gave one of her best performances just last year with Ammonite. It's just that the film around her sucked.

I was wondering if anyone was watching this. Reviews are good, but there doesn't seem to be much hype or chatter about this show 2 episodes in. I suspected that might be the case, but for a HBO show with a high profile prestige actress like Winslet attached, this doesn't exactly seem like appointment television. I don't think Winslet's starpower/appeal is what it was say even 10 years ago

I'm loving it so far. Between this and Ammonite, Winslet is on fire again.
Also, I'd add that this type of slow-burn series really isn't designed to appeal to the masses in the way that something like the flashy, soapy The Undoing was. I'm thinking word of mouth will help to establish its popularity.

Yeah, 2 episodes in this is really strong. Like an interesting mix of Sharp Objects and Olive Kitteridge. Winslet has rarely been better, fully embodying this character from the accent to her walk to even the way she eats. Everyone else offers great support. Can be a little slow, but I also like that it's taking its time to establish the town and its inhabitants. Very intrigued to see where it goes.

So I thought the accent was absolutely insane but my husband said it's spot on, haha. I'm just going along for the ride with this one and am really digging it so far. All the other shows/series this is being compared to I really didn't like -- so I hope this one doesn't shit the bed. Gotta say though, the casting is really good and I'm very invested in the crime. Anyone have theories yet? I'm leaning towards Angourie Rice.

It's done well in the show. Solidly made so far, I think Ep3 was the best yet...with some of Winslet's best acted scenes. Seems like a show better to binge, to steep into the story... I had forgot about the peeping tom when they brought that back up in Ep3.

- There's potential for the sequel if they just go out towards like Reading too .......there's that area where Wawa and Sheetz both share stores - it used to be that Wawa got the one side of the state and Sheetz the other (where Penn State and Pittsburgh is) but the middle part of the state had some overlap .......you really haven't lived until you've heard a heavily accented person say " Sheetz AND Wawa in the same sentence"
