For me its Ben Foster. IMO he would be great in a Wes Anderson film. Doesn't have to be the lead role at all but I think he would excel under Anderson's direction.

I've said this before but Denzel Washington is a major actor lacking great comic work - though he occasionally can be funny in drama (very funny in Training Day especially). No actor of his stature in drama is lacking in comedic work like he is - ever - except like Montgomery Clift and he had far less films. I think it causes him to suffer where he's ranked imo - with comic success and better filmography I'd rate him higher - one day he'll come back and try one and if he pulls it off it will be nearly as big a deal for his work as Macbeth is.....and Macbeth is a very big deal. He's tried it, but......to me it hasn't worked yet really. Also, Bobby Cannavale can do an exasperated deadpan great and he's been in comedies but could be fantastic as a lead in one I think....am I the only one who loves him as Fizbo's clown partner in Modern Family? He has a goofy funny side that hasn't been caught fully in the movies.......

I've always said I really enjoyed Hanks and (more rarely) Kostner in pure comedic roles and would like to see them again in comedy.

I'd welcome him doing more comedy, but when you have a comedy that's supplanted a Cary Grant original as a holiday favorite, you've made your mark on the genre. That's how GOATs roll I guess. Black films almost never do well on IMDB ratings, so I'm always surprised people still try to use that as a legitimate metric for black films or shows about anything. It's rated 4.8 (out of 5) on Amazon Prime with 5000 ratings, so it has it's fans. Soppy and sentimental romantic comedies aren't for everyone, but this one plays every year. www.amazon.com/Preachers-Wife-Denzel-Washington/dp/B004L3DUFY

Anthony Hopkins !! His funniest perf might actually be Lector in a dark, sick way. But really he has no comic triumphs and in his goofball twitter videos he's practically begging to be cast in something slapstick.

The bigger point for The Preacher's Wife IMDB rating was more that it only has 11,000 votes, not something you'd expect from what you characterize as a popular Christmas movie starring someone as big as Denzel. 2. Plenty of things on Amazon Prime have inflated ratings far above their general esteem. One for the Money has a 4.4/5 with just a hair under 4,000 ratings.

Denzel has one of the most popular and enduring Christmas romantic comedies going on his resume in The Preacher's Wife. LOL No, they didn't. It was part of their AFI Movie Club movie selections for 2020 for online communal viewing alongside movies like Elf and The Best Man Holiday. Nowhere in their selection write-up do they say it's a top movie or a classic (like they do for It's a Wonderful Life), because it isn't. Except the BFI didn't acknowledge it as a "major comic success" either. They say it's one of Washington's 10 essential films (which is not saying much, given his filmography) and that "It’s a little corny (it is a Christmas movie after all) but cute too, watching Washington horse around with Whitney on an outdoor ice rink." That's barely even praise. Yes, he's certainly made a mark on the genre with a movie that has mediocre ratings and scores from both critics and audiences But I guess you kind of have to spin it that way when it's pretty much the only comedy movie he's done. Critics: The Bishop's Wife: 6.90/10 with 84% Tomatometer The Preacher's Wife: 6.00/10 with 60% Tomatometer Audiences: The Bishop's Wife: 7.6/10 (IMDb), 3.5/5 (Letterboxd), 4/5 (Rotten Tomatoes) The Preacher's Wife: 5.6/10 (IMDb), 2.9/5 (Letterboxd), 3.4/5 (Rotten Tomatoes) Yeah, I'm going to go out on a limb and say The Preacher's Wife hasn't supplanted The Bishop's Wife (which isn't even one of Cary Grant's classics).

The Undoing was just announced as the most watched show on HBO of 2020, exceeding both seasons of Big Little Lies.
It "only" has 55,000 ratings on IMDB, compared to something like The Queens Gambit which has 250,000 votes on IMDB. The Undoings IMDB ratings are not reflective at all of how watched the show was in the real world. Sometimes the demographic of certain shows or films do not engage much with platforms like IMDB. Despite knowing for certain that The Undoing was a global smash hit show with millions upon millions of viewers, it's IMDB rating engagement does not really reflect that. So why should a 1996 African-American Christmas rom-com reflect that? Perhaps, like with The Undoing, most fans of The Preacher's Wife don't engage much with IMDB. People like what they like on Amazon. But at least the votes there feel like mostly legitimate customer ratings (for better or worse) as opposed to dumb racist incels who unfortunately make the IMDB rating system wholly unreliable.

Denzel Washington should do a comedy so he can be declared a great actor..because until that happens he's only good. Never mind all the Shakespeare, Eugene O'Neill, and August Wilson work he's done..until he does his version of Ernest Scared Stupid...he will be extremely lacking and limited as an actor.

While The Wolf of Wall Street and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood have been characterized as comedies (for good reason), they are other genres too. Don't Look Up is pretty much a straight comedy. Nice straw man there. Pacinoyes has said around 289 times now that Washington is a great actor and a top 15 American actor in his book.

You'd think with numbers as incredible as those sound, Bridgerton would have smashed or be close to smashing those IMDB ratings numbers of The Queens Gambit. Yet it's nowhere close. Or perhaps the core fanbase of Bridgerton viewers don't really engage with IMDB, so you can't ascertain it's real world viewership, engagement or popularity based on that.

Again, misrepresenting what was said. No one called him "only good"......certainly not ME. Also: hasn't he done like 1 O'Neill play (there's 2 l's in O'Neill btw) and 1 Wilson play/film? Maybe those guys wrote some comedies he could do

Yeah, that was a weird diss. Whatever someone's opinion of it is, this is a multi-nominated performance which got the three big nods and even won the American Comedy Award (whatever it is) which is exactly what this thread is about.
