I'm not even the biggest Pitt fan but he takes this easily. He has actually been close to legit great a couple times, Cooper is the personification of meh.

I fell in love with Cooper in the Limitless/SilverLinings era. But now I just think he's more of a try-hard. I don't understand what people saw in his A Star Is Born perf. He was constantly giving me smug white male privilege vibes. I just couldn't get past his smug expression and into the character at all.
Whatever Pitt's limitations as an actor, I can always suspend my personal reactions to his own persona and enjoy the performance for what it is. And like countjohn said, he's been great per demands of the role plenty of times.

Well, Pitt ............but that could all change like in mere months - Bradley Cooper gave a better single dramatic performance than Pitt ever did tbh - and I'm no Cooper fan to put it mildly - but he did it on the stage so it doesn't count, but........I saw it........so it counts. He was great in The Elephant Man (though not as great as Billy Crudup in the same role) maybe that's all he can do - that's possible........ I dunno.........but he could have easily won the Tony for it (he lost). Pitt is a marvelous comic actor at least (not so much drama) - and I always make fun of great dramatic actors who can't be funny so that's a big compliment......but Cooper is playing Stan Carlisle in Nightmare Alley which is a just tremendous role from the book at least........if anything makes people change their mind on him it will be that.

For the roles I’ve found each of them great in, I don’t think the other would have done better. I think there are plenty of roles outside of those they are somewhat interchangeable in. Somewhat leaning towards Cooper here.

Pitt is far more consistent but I think Cooper has higher highs and more vulnerability and hell, even versatility so I'm gonna throw him a bone.

I saw him on Broadway too and I was really, really impressed. Easily his best performance.

Pitt in 12 Monkeys and Snatch (without even mentioning Fight Club or Jesse James) is better than anything Cooper has done in his career.
Look, i think Cooper is a good actor, but how come he's suddenly become this de facto "nominee by default" like Streep, Washington, or DiCap?? And that comes from someone who thought he should have won for A Star Is Born (but shouldn't even have been nominated for American Hustle and American Sniper) He has already 4 Acting noms just like stronger and more revered actors who have been around and at the top way longer than him like Phoenix, Bale, and Pitt himself. I genuinely hope he's not getting any nom this year (despite the hype or what's the character on paper) from the new Del Toro or PTA movies, otherwise it would be ridiculous.
I hope he wins an Oscar for the upcoming Bernstein biopic and then that's it, the Academy moves on from him.

He's definitely not a defacto nominee in the same sense as Washington and Streep, who can regularly get nominated without being in Best Picture nominated films . With them, it's about how much the Academy admires their acting, not how much they like their film. Cooper is getting nominated because he's always in Best Picture nominated projects (some he's even producing/directing himself, like A Star Is Born) and he does solid enough work in of them acting-wise. Sometimes, that is enough to have a run with the Academy. Ask George Clooney.

I'm not kidding and I'm not predicting it but with his upcoming projects are so stellar he could conceivably be a double nominee at next year's Oscars , surpass DiCaprio AND be just one behind Washington in the next 2 years ............. all at just 48.

Pitt cleans Cooper's clock imo. So many more iconic roles.
Cooper was great in The A Team and as that talking raccoon in those Marvel films but other than that he comes across as a try hard d bag
