I rarely watch our local films because I usually find them terrible, but this was honestly really good. It wasn't perfect as I feel like the whole narrative kind of eased into it as it went on, but the last act was quite brilliant imo. It was so suppressed and brutal, but also always had a layer of tenderness and warmth to it. It also didn't feel as long as it was (2.5 hr).
Also, I usually have problem watching performances in Mandarin as I tend to find the delivery a complete mess, but the acting performances in this were collectively convincing and never relied on histrionics. Especially the villain, I was shocked by how genuinely scary and chilling he was. I also really liked the score, and the cinematography was gorgeous (the DP was the director himself).
Anyway I hope it receives a nod in the end. Overall probably 8-8.5/10.
