Some of his best or most notable work on film isn't on the poll:
Star Trek: The Undiscoverd Country
Waterloo
The Night Of The Generals
The Fall Of The Roman Empire
Of what is on the poll, I'll go for Captain Von Trapp in The Sound Of Music. A truly iconic role, and it's hard to picture anybody doing it better. Deserved a Best Actor nomination for it.
I'd probably pick one of Waterloo, The Night Of The Generals or The Fall Of The Roman Empire as his best overall work on film. He is pitch perfect as the Duke Of Wellington in Waterloo opposite Rod Steiger's rather histrionic Napoleon Bonaparte.

Great actors, are in great movies - I say it all the time but that's a fact and for him the role and movie are...... The Insider
I'd also post this which isn't a movie but which is marvelous acting and very HIM - Plummer "Acting Out" James Tyrone from Long Day's Journey Into Night - one of the great roles of the theater in a PBS special - and I don't think many have seen this on MAR.
You learn more about him from this than you do from most of his film roles I'd say...........

The Insider. Still can't believe he didn't get a nomination, but Crowe did.

The Insider. Still can't believe he didn't get a nomination, but Crowe did. While it's a travesty that he didn't get a nomination, a) they were in different categories. b) Crowe was incredible as well.

Dragnet was my first and holds a special place in my heart, but Waterloo is probably my favourite. Of your choices probably The Insider closely followed by All the Money in the World.

I vote the Nataly Wood film. He was like 9 years older in real life. But un the film he was older while Natalie much younger. A trully first clases villian. However My favorite perfomance is as Herodes Antipas in Jesús of Nazareth, opposite Valentina Cortesse as Herodias.

The Last Station, just slightly over The Insider. His Tolstoy was a delight.

Honestly, I think he stands out far, far more for any last three performances (Beginners, All the Money, Knives Out) than for everything I've seen from earlier combined (Sound of Music, 12 Monkeys, The Insider, Malcolm X, Dolores Claiborne, A Beautiful Mind, Inside Man, Dragon Tattoo)
