This is totally like an episode of Succession.

Bezos moved (or was forced by his board) to a less official role to get ahead of this scandal. His position was probably already tenuous because Amazon are known for low pay and poor working conditions for their staff under his tenure. Stealing wages from staff is the straw that broke the camel's back. It's clear Bezos didn't become a billionaire by having ethical business practices. Sounds like the sort of shit that happens with Logan and Kendall Roy every season.

But make no mistake. Bezos hasn't quit. He's just done what Vladimir Putin does every few years to avoid the scrutiny of a democratic election, and changed job titles. I have little doubt he is still the most powerful person at Amazon, and the new CEO will probably be some chosen specifically because he will have influence over them.
