Born the same day as Christian Bale. All hail the newly-minted queen, whose career has taken her on a rather dazzling journey the last fifteen years—and oh, the range! From her hilarious work on Peep Show that carried her to scene-stealing comedy work like in Hot Fuzz to her unbelievable dramatic range kickstarted by Tyrannosaur and which carried over into incredible television performances like Broadchurch and The Night Manager, all of which culminated in her Oscar success for The Favourite. What can I say, it’s Olivia’s world and we’re all living in it.

Damn, birthdays dropping all at once for Oscar winning British actors! Olivia Colman whom like Christian Bale is also 47 today, is one of the most acclaimed British character actresses of her generation, having had a distinguished award winning career on British TV since the early 2000's. She's come to more international prominence in recent years with things like The Favorite and The Crown, and in all probability she is the new Judi Dench or Maggie Smith (a perennial British institution of an actress who will be around for the next 40 years and made a Dame). Happy Birthday Olivia!

Earlier today and (too) many times in the past I've talked about an actor playing "the emotion, not the text" and how that's a huge trap - some actors, sometimes can pull it off but that's rare - you have to be like Depardieu or Mastroianni or Magnani to really do that - and that's just in some cases and they're a special breed.
If you watch Colman in Tyrannosaur - you literally can see her NOT playing the emotion and avoiding all these traps - it's amazing - playing the text and trusting the text and it hits like a ton of bricks - and not only that, you see it in The Father where she could be a lot showier than she is. But what she is, is better because of her choices.
I saw Kathryn Erbe do it opposite Langella and she was good but far more animated and conveyed less. It's not Colman being subtle or some nonsense like that - it's that she 100% plays what's written and doesn't feel the need to step on Hopkins text or work either........and trusts you to get where the text leads not where she leads you.
She's exceptional at this sort of thing.....across genres too.....
