Damn, at least she lived long enough to receive the lifetime achievement award from the academy. Terrific actress, especially in a movie like Sounder. Also a very important figure and a huge inspiration to a lot of African American actresses of not just the past, but today. RIP Ms. Tyson!

RIP I saw her on Broadway in 2015 with James Earl Jones in The Gin Game and even though it was just a so-so production - you knew you were in some legendary presences with great shared histories - and each had some great moments that night. Honored to have seen her .....

She truly didn’t look anywhere near her age.

Such an icon and legend. The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman left a huge impact on me growing up. She leaves behind an amazing body of work. RIP.

Rest in Peace Loved her in Sounder (and the one episode of How to Get Away with Murder I saw her in) and need to see more of her work.

As she says in A Man Called Adam (1966), her first substantial movie role, "I know what I got to give."
She sure did...... She always had an immediate strength and draw to her on screen and I'm sure she was special on stage too. It's surprising she was nearly 40y/o when she was doing the East Side/West Side series with George C Scott - as one historian said "It might be the most significant socially themed dramatic program to air in the 60s." And it's even more surprising she was 48y/o when nominated for Sounder - she seemed so young there.
It's also so sad how her memoir was released just a few days ago. She was practically mid press tour.... RIP
