Yikes, well can't say I agree with her on that one. That and Catwoman are probably my favorite of her performances.

Haven't seen the film in question so I can't comment on that, but it does open up a very interesting discussion in regards to how we view certain performances versus how the actors themselves view said performances.

Love Field, The Age of Innocence, and The Fabulous Bakers Boys destroys her work in Batman Returns. Interesting people only name the movies they've seen... which are a Scorsese, a Batman movie, and Dangerous Liaisons.

I've said something like this before but you can never really "trust" when artists - ANY artist actually - offers opinions on their own work (or peers work actually) - even if it matches our opinion because we see it at a different angle anyway. So much goes into that for them - how their life was when an actor shot a movie, the personal experience they had, how they see their own limitations, how they perceive their skill set, how they contextualize it. I always use the Jack Nicholson/Hoffa example in such cases: to me, at most there are MAYBE 3 American film actors EVER better than him (Brando, DePac) and I can buy an argument for him as THE GOAT even.......AND he was an exceedingly smart actor too.........he said in Rolling Stone that he couldn't give a better performance than he did in Hoffa  ...........he's utterly wrong imo, and it's interesting he feels that way, but he's too close to it and his own effort he made on it to judge the result I'd say.........and it's ALL just opinion anyway........but that also gets into self-assessment which is tough for anyone anyway - ever have to write a self-assessment for your job?  |

What?! I was just rewatching it last night (or well, half of it, hopefully finishing it tonight) as a birthday watch and I loved her! I think artists are often very self-critical. I don't doubt she thinks she could've done a better job and feels insecure about it but it's still a beautiful turn.

Not surprised. I remember her saying "Married to the Mob" and "Batman Returns" are the only performances she truly felt satisfied.

She admits that she's never happy with her performances in that video too. I think the extra reason why she might single out "The Age of Innocence" in particular is because it didn't bring her the awards attention she probably thought it would. Her awards path was certainly impressive at that point so when she got to those heights and then landed a meaty leading role in a Scorsese period piece, she probably set an expectation of what would come out of it. And when it didn't pay off she might've felt she did something wrong. I'm not saying she was an awards hungry shark btw - I think those expectations are perfectly reasonable for any actor to have during those phases of their careers. |

Gary Oldman notoriously loathes his performance in Sid and Nancy, but objectively it's one of his actual best in his career.
Many famous actors do that all the time.

What?! Omar Shariff hated his perfomance in Lawerence of Arabia. So it's not uncomon that actor hate part of their most famouse work.- Any way, speaking of Countess Olenska in 1993, Pfeiffer was critized for being too modern for the role.- She could be better. I guess, she had the talent for it. I mean she was great, but this could be the performance of her lifetime. So at the end it's a kind of missed opportunity.- She is only sublime when she is alone without parlament, her eyes expressed all the repressed lust.- But in her scenes talking share scenes, she isn't as good as Day Lewis, Ryder or Margoyles.- |
