Ben Affleck in 2012 taught us all that no one is a lock until the Academy president butchers your name on nomination morning.

This is like the 2015/2016 season where a shit ton of random nominations and snubs were everywhere that in several categories only 3 or even 2 people felt like locks.

I still can't imagine it. I really can't. BAFTA has this innate bias against a certain demographic of American performances and characters (i.e. Melissa Leo in The Fighter), and Close's character falls into that milieu of things they tend to steer clear of. But who knows at this stage? Seyfried just got poleaxed hard, and while people have come back to win after a SAG miss, there's really no reason why she should have missed.

What I think hurts Close even more than the shittiness of her film is that she has to share that tough-as-nails grandmotherly archetype in a rural setting with a fellow nominee-to-be in Youn, whose film is gaining a lot of traction right now and who just managed to coup a SAG nomination despite being a general unknown.

Seyfried is still pretty safe, but Lindo.... It ain't looking good. They only thing she has going for her is that she's playing a real person.

I rarely call people locks. Actor - Boseman. Actress - Davis and McDormand. Supporting Actor - Supporting Actress - I’d just add Ahmed in Actor and Mulligan in Actress to the mix for now.

Seyfried is still pretty safe, but Lindo.... It ain't looking good. They only thing she has going for her is that she's playing a real person. And she's in an overall strong film. And her category is still kinda weak. And she's campaigning.

So here's what I'm thinking post-HFPA, SAG, and BFCA (all alphabetical by category):
ACTOR Chadwick Boseman, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom Anthony Hopkins, The Father
ACTRESS Viola Davis, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom Frances McDormand, Nomadland Carey Mulligan, Promising Young Woman
SUPPORTING ACTOR Sacha Baron Cohen, The Trial of the Chicago 7 Daniel Kaluuya, Judas and the Black Messiah Leslie Odom Jr., One Night in Miami
SUPPORTING ACTRESS Olivia Colman, The Father
Any updates for you guys?

Actor: Boseman
Actress: McDormand Davis Mulligan
Supporting Actor: SBC
Supporting Actress: None
I think there are clearly a lot more very safe and likely noms but sticking with this for absolute locks.
