I don't mean to come across as such a "hater" but I still remain baffled at the appeal of Adam Driver IMO he was laughably bad in those Star Wars films as the whiny/emo Vader wannabe (like I'm talking Razzie worthy). A lot of his acting in his other films didn't impress me much either and were often forgettable (I guess I thought he was good in Inside Llewyn Davis but that was such a small role. Gotta admit though he did make the most of it. He absolutely must have one of the best agent in Hollywood that is for sure haha. He has all these big name directors lining up to work with him which just baffles me. .I can't deny that his career has really taken off since being on that horrible HBO show starring Lena Dunham so I say props to him. Wish him all the best. Sorry for the mini rant folks, just had to get that off my chest.

Quite a bit actually ( Silence, Logan Lucky, Paterson , Marriage Story, Blackkklansmen, Girls, Midnight Special and of course the Star Wars new trilogy) I just honestly don't get the appeal and he hasn't "wowed" me in anything in his filmography. But what do I know (I'm just some asshole on a move message board spouting off shit lol. Clearly he is impressing a lot of these big name directors cause he has a lot of them lining up to work with him. I'm remaining cautiously optimistic that The Last Duel will deliver the goods at least.

The parts he plays he plays well but I find myself forgetting the performance pretty much straight away.

He's incredibly brave, commanding, and captivating in his performances. He's like every 1970s leading man rolled into one. Whether you like it or not, he's here to stay for a long time.

I’d say I like him a bit more than you (probably enjoy 50% of his performances) but I do find him very hit or miss. For example I didn’t find him remotely authentic or believable in Marriage Story.

Look at the directors he has in his hip pocket already (!) - and he's at 6 Triple Crown nominations at less than 40 - that's an all-timer pace for actors who do more than just movies - he kills his own generation of Americans there already Gyllenhaal (2) and he'll blow past big name guys - big name American movie actors too - Hanks (7), Dustin Hoffman (9), Denzel (10), Spacey (10), Duvall (11), Newman (12) ........... theoretically he could even challenge or surpass Lemmon & Pacino (15) ............I mean you have to look at him in the broader context..........it's a history making run......he may win Best Actor at Cannes to go along with his Volpi Cup at Venice in the next few days............at 37...............the "great" performances will come soon enough....................for now - personally - I'm enjoying the ride and "good" work myself.........

He's worked with lots of top directors, but mostly due to a willingness to take on minor roles. Could Gosling have appeared in Lincoln or Llewyn Davis or J. Edgar? Probably. I think Driver's biggest problem is that he's not "cool". He doesn't have a swagged out aura; his face is sort of weird, as is his voice, so directors may have trouble envisioning him as their protagonist. Like I can't even imagine Christopher Nolan casting him as the lead of a sci-fi/action picture. So, yeah, I think it remains to be seen whether Driver can transition into being a fully-fledged leading man.

He's worked with lots of top directors, but mostly due to a willingness to take on minor roles. Could Gosling have appeared in Lincoln or Llewyn Davis or J. Edgar? Probably. I don't disagree....................... but this general way of thinking always drives me nuts - " could" another actor have done something isn't the same as actually doing it......like I hear that all the time - actor X could do theater "if he wanted to" .........actor X could have the Triple Crown "if he wanted to" but that's not the same thing as actually accepting and doing the work..... You're right about Driver & Gosling in 2011-2013 more or less........but they aren't small roles in 2016-2022 obviously.....I mean when you have a freakin' nose like Adam Driver and you haven't had your breakthrough yet........small roles are how you get your foot (and um, nose) in the door........it worked - he won his Volpi the next year etc.........just saying so far at 37 he deserves crazy respect for what he's taken and who he's worked with - but like I said above, I'm still waiting for the actual work to kick up a notch too....from good to great

From World of Reel, so grain of salt yadda yadda .......but interesting gossip-y stuff:
I’m all for auteur filmmakers bankrupting Netflix, but Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise,” which is an adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel, seems to have had a troubling production.
The budget on the Netflix original is said to have skyrocketed to $100+ million. Of course, there is no way an adaptation of DeLillo’s novel should be more than $30-50 million, there is no CGI needed and it’s mostly characters monologuing with each other in various rooms. And yet, the budget completely ballooned for this one.
Is it any wonder that Netflix have decided to strip back on their auteur “vanity” projects? A twitter user by the name of Saul Atreides had this to say:
Many of the people on the set that I'm on now worked on “Wheat Germ” (then titled “White Noise”). They all back it up, and usually contribute their own horror stories of being on that set.
Saul adds that three crew members died during the shoot. What?! A little digging and we learn that those three deaths were an overdose, a suicide, and a heart attack, which set production back. Not Baumbach’s fault.
Another person by the name of Sam, added “I was an extra on it for a couple days, the production design went crazy.” An anonymous source is also telling me that Baumbach “burned through film prints like there was no tomorrow.”
Let’s not forget Baumbach swapped DP’s mid-shoot, from Michael Seresin to Lol Crawley. Shooting went on for nine months. Sounds like he dug himself into his very own “Heaven’s Gate.”
DeLillo’s novel has been deemed “impossible to film” ever since it was published back in 1985. It is a plotless postmodernist exploration of death, consumerism, and suburban malaise. Dealing with Jack and Babette Gladney, a college professor of “Hitler studies” and his mostly-loving wife, DeLillo’s novel deals with this couple’s social anxieties, but, more specifically, their unabashed fear of death.

We've had some dud adaptations of fine novels lately - Waiting For The Barbarians (a great novel actually) for one - but that trailer for White Noise - also a great novel - actually evokes the same feel of the text despite being said to be "unfilmable" - cautiously optimistic.......
