Loved the book when I read it a few years ago. This team ... actually feels like a pretty great fit for it? Pretty excited...

Almost double posted this ........this is a huge deal......... Driver is a beast going from Gucci right into this ........for book lovers this is one step below Blood Merdian in the "they'll never film it" sweepstakes.......damn......ambitious stuff I'm glad that he's taking chances with this and Annette. I mean he's done a lot of indies but it seems in mostly supporting roles, so for now, I like that he gravitates towards this kind of material when he's arguably at his peak especially since Annette nor this sound like it will be typical awards bait. (I know he does have Yankee Comandante which will likely be a lot more conventional compared to Annette and White Noise, but I have no idea when he's going to finally fit it in, I would guess the earliest would be the end of this year but maybe next year now since Driver already has three movies before then and I haven't heard any other recent news about YC.) I know he's got Gucci too, but I'm not really sure how large his role is going to be. It seems like Lady Gaga might have the largest role, and I know he likes to work with certain directors a lot, so I'm guessing that plus the cast like he was going to turn down the chance to work with Pacino was a big part of the appeal of it. (Not to say that he's not thirsty to win an Oscar, although they all are really, but at least to me he's a little bit more subtle about it than say Bradley Cooper.)

Baumbach adapting De Lillo (and one of his toughest novels) is something I would've never imagined.

Baumbach adapting De Lillo (and one of his toughest novels) is something I would've never imagined. It is straight up one of the most daring artistic moves I can think of a filmmaker to try - or has tried - in recent memory - particularly this filmmaker who has like, what, 15 movies under his belt already and is already defined as we know him? Daring............or foolish........but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt and going with daring.....

There are not many American filmmakers who I think could tackle DeLillo. PTA has done Pynchon and could do DeLillo, I think Soderbergh could have done it but he would have needed a supremely talented writer, and probably the Coens. In the past, probably Altman.

Wonder if this Netflix bubble will ever burst? It feels like they have bottomless pots of cash to spunk out on filmmakers and stars, but at some point economic reality has to set in.

Still want to hold on to that "Kaluuya is better than Driver" poll vote you recency bias types? Hmmmmm - how about when Driver has 10 Oscar nods - 2 wins. Just sayin, that's possible people! Side note: Apparently this is called "Wheat Germ" now because "Colon Blow" was already taken for satirical cereal purposes.... thefilmstage.com/emily-mortimer-and-alessandro-nivolas-children-cast-in-noah-baumbachs-white-noise/Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola’s childen, the 11-year-old May and 17-year-old Sam, have joined the ensemble, as revealed in this month’s Bazaar UK.
A campus satire / oddball marriage comedy / horror story about industrialization, White Noise concerns Jack Gladney (Driver), professor of Hitler studies at the university referred to only as (again: campus satire) The-College-on-the-Hill. His life as teacher of Hitler, husband to Babette (Gerwig), and father to four children / stepchildren is torn asunder by “the Airborne Toxic Event,” a cataclysmic train accident that casts chemical waste over his town. While it isn’t specified, one imagines Sam will play Heinrich Gerhardt, the most substantial character when it comes to the children roles in the novel.

That would only matter though if that poll was "Who will win an Oscar first" ............the poll was just who people thought was the better actor so it's different thing, but...........you're not wrong either ...........

I feel like Driver's gotten way too much credit for merely associating with successful filmmakers, regardless of whether or not the film itself, or his contribution to it, was remarkable in any way. What did he do in Lincoln? 5 seconds in Llewyn Davis? It's like if Leo had a 3 second cameo in Eyes Wide Shut, and a slight role as a kid in The Dekalog, and people act like those are serious credits.

Does anyone remember on the old board when a user made a thread for White Noise (2005) when it came out and someone responded that they weren't interested in an Eminem biopic?

I live in Ohio, but not anywhere where they are filming. Not that I’d actually be brave enough to do it even as an extra lol.

Don Cheadle joins ....... Great addition. Also there’s been pics of how the town has been transformed on social media, and it’s looking really good. I don’t know what will be in contention next year for production design, but I definitely get flashbacks to the ‘80s whenever I see new pictures. Maybe it’s been awhile since the last season of Stranger Things, and I haven’t watched it since binge watching season 3 over a few days, but I could see the comparison except that with that show I feel like I was really impressed with the first season in how much attention was paid to the era it was set in but became less so over time. Maybe it was because I just got used to it and didn’t notice it anymore. On the other hand with a lot of these photos, I do get a sense right away of a small college town from the ‘80s especially the record store and campus store.
