Oh honey, that role was made for Debra Messing about ten years ago.
I'm guessing Blannie will focus on Lucille Ball's tougher studio running side although nobody wants to see Lucy portrayed as a workaholic bitch!

Glad this is still on. She’s unstoppable at this point.

No one can touch her anyway but in bio/true life stories her "peers" (ha!) really can't ......just as a mimic she's way too good and uncanny.

Amazon chief said they were looking at directors back in January..... not that I'd pick him but I wonder if/why Sorkin wouldn't continue directing like his last two scripts. Also who's playing Desi? Bardem was mentioned early for the role (opposite Blanchett would be a monumental two) and he's been working with Amazon. Hmmm. Oscar Isaac I keep hearing but what about two that kinda look more like Arnaz - Pedro Pascal, Wagner Maura. Are they too small fry opposite Blanchett?

I don't think this could happen but I'm going to throw my support to the American Mark Rylance dammit - Raúl Esparza. I know he's just thought of as a nobody and he's been cashing checks for years on Law & Order SVU..........but he's at least a 7 time Drama Desk nominee (a multiple winner), 4 time Tony nominee (0 for 4), and across a dizzying range of material ...........and he can sing and dance...........and he's in Blanchett's age range........he was memorable to me in Hannibal and other things - I just covered him in the Stage/TV/Movie thread too. His background is Cuban too ......he sort of could look like him (I'm stretching it but he looks more like Desi Arnaz than Kristin Stewart looks like Princess Diana ) ......I'd love to see him get that role .......or just any role to make him not just be this peripheral guy that he is........he's too good. I've seen him on stage and......he's no joke.......grrrrrrrr

Wasn't Cate Blanchett expected to star? Or is this separate project? I thought it was separate at first but it’s the same project without Blanchett this time. Moved the post to the existing thread.

Kidman can’t do comedy. Lucille Ball is one of the greatest comedians of all time. How is that going to work?

One of the great unsaid said things on MAR is this pretending that Aaron Sorkin can actually direct what he writes......he really can't or at least has not shown signs of it even though he's made two good, predictable, dullish "7" films.....I'd be more excited with it directed by someone else tbh

Bardem is one of the best in the world so when he lands a potentially major project it should be cause for celebration, but...
I don’t know what sounds worse, Javier Bardem whose English accent is... THICK trying to do Aaron Sorkin, or Nicole Kidman who can’t move her face doing Lucille Ball.

Kidman is the best English speaking actress working, and she has been on an incredible run of form for the last 4 or 5 years. She wouldn't be my first choice for Lucille Ball personally (was Debra Messing busy?), but she's so bloody gifted that I wouldn't bet against her knocking it out of the park either. As a fan of Kidman, it's exciting. If she nails it, that's probably her 2nd Oscar.
And Bardem is almost been the opposite of Kidman, in terms of bad luck with roles and projects in the last few years. But he is a truly great actor, and this is the kind of role that can really return him to the winners circle. As an admirer of his talent, I'm happy for him that he has got this opportunity. As with Kidman, I believe his raw talent is such that he can pull this off.
Looking forward to this.

I feel like maybe Kidman's work in The Prom (which was super expressive ) probably helped convince Sorkin Kidman could pull it off. Looking at it in hindsight, her ditzy chorus girl character in The Prom was a very Lucille-Ball-esque turn. And wasn't Ricardo's accent pretty thick? Or was that just a put on for the TV show. Bardem should be fine if that was Arnaz/Ricardo's real accent.

. And wasn't Ricardo's accent pretty thick? Or was that just a put on for the TV show. It’s not the authenticity of his accent that I think is the problem so much as the fact that Sorkin only really ever writes anything one way, and the idea of someone for whom English is a second language, with an accent so heavy it can be tough understanding him even when he’s talking normally sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Ok. gotcha. I understand what you are saying, and you have a point. But I do suspect Bardem will be cut a lot of slack even if his dialogue is unintelligible, because people will just associate it with Arnaz himself having a heavy accent.

We’ve see some actors work around being miscast in some respects and still give solid/respectable performances. Kidman however, is so insanely miscast here that I genuinely cannot even imagine how this would work. Everything from her acting style, look, presence is just wrong for the part. Blanchett was also a questionable choice, though. Maybe they’re just approaching big names instead of people who look and feel suitable for the role.
I was also thinking that they’d get someone other than Sorkin to direct. I imagined Marielle Heller when the project was announced

I'm a much bigger fan of Kidman than Blanchett in general but was actually looking forward to Blanchett in the role and think Kidman is utterly miscast in nearly every way.

If he didn't ask then he is being a snob and wants to sell it based on Nicole's name.

Nicole is being absolutely eviscerated on Twitter. Just search her name and there are endless tweets criticizing her casting. If this gets made, it could potentially end her career.
