Aronofsky's turned out some real shit lately with Noah and Mother! which I didn't think could possibly be as bad as everyone said and then it somehow was. I thought normies who came out for JLaw were just hating on it for being weird, but no. So he really needs a good one again. This is one where I can imagine it either going really well or.........not. Especially with the Brendan Fraser casting.

This is done filming already. This year seems so full, and A24 doesn’t seem to handle several projects that well yet. On the other hand, Brendan Fraser has a lot of goodwill right now especially after the asshole who assaulted him has shown himself to be an even bigger asshole. Plus, it might be that great that it would do well no matter what year it comes out.

I don't know, maybe Aronofsky takes his time in editing like Scorsese, so it could be a 2022 release.

Damn that recent photo of Brendan is pretty sad (wasn't he once considered to be a Hollywood "heart throb" at one point in his career?? He was quite healthy and fit looking in The Mummy (but I keep forgetting that film is like over 20 years old. Haven't followed his career that closely over the years but I do seem to recall he had some very bad injuries while filming some film which sidelined him for quite sometime . Probably also caused him to get so out of shape because he wasn't able to exercise at all. And then there's that nasty divorce of his where his ex wife was demanding tons of alimony/child support etc. Probably took a toll on the guy. I wish him all the best. Anyways, I absolutely welcome the Brendan Fraser comeback tour for sure. Bring that shit on! The only thing that gives me pause (or lack of confidence in The Whale) is Darren Aronofsky's direction going completely off the deep end & he tries too hard to shock the audience with a bunch of stupid/goofy crap . For example, I sincerely hope there are no montages or disgusting scenes of Fraser's character gorging on a bunch of food . Knowing Aronofksy though, there probably will be haha.

Yeah man, that stuff's absolutely going to be there and who knows what else. He's gone for cheap shock value ever since Requiem for a Dream. Rewatched Black Swan for the first time in a while recently and while I still liked it there was way more cheap gross out stuff than I remembered like all the shots of Portman's nails. Like I said, this could still turn out being good but on a certain level Aaronofsky is a sleazy provocateur and at this point I expect a strain of that to be running through everything he does. Hopefully it's just not garbage like Mother!

Wow Samantha Morton, she deserves a comeback too. First landed the trully Cersei Lannister Role in The Serpent Queen and now this. I hope an Oscar for her. Maybe is a little weird, but is unfair that she isn't in the place she deserves according her talents.-

Erik Anderson says he heard it’s being pushed to 2022.
Of course it can always change, but I was somewhat surprised that it seems we’re still getting a lot of big releases this year, at least just going by the past few weeks especially the last week where we got several big trailers as well as big news about films that seem like they’ll be in contention during awards season.
Still I’m guessing some of the things that haven’t been dated yet and/or aren’t going to any fall festivals are probably going to be held back with COVID rates skyrocketing again in many places, and movie going still not being back to pre-COVID levels. Even the stuff that has been dated and already has marketing, out I wouldn’t be surprised if some of those get moved to.

Sadie Sink from Stranger Things is a good actress. I wonder if she can score a supporting actress nod here???

Continuing to be the bearer of bad news, looks like this is 2023 too. I was hoping Fraser would win this year too. I guess there’s next year, but it usually doesn’t seem like a good thing for a film to be held until the next year. Plus he’ll have to go against Cooper.

With the delays of this and the Aster, looks like A24 are hellbent on putting every ounce of their money and energy in campaigning EEAAO and nothing else.

One of my most anticipated films of the year. Say what you will about Aronofksy, he is an excellent director of actors.

Ruimy saw it, some non-spoiler comments from him:
I managed to attend a private screening of Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale.” Can I say anything? Not really. Usually, when I have positive things to write about an embargoed film, I’ll reach out to a publicist and ask “is so and so okay?” but I’ll refrain with this one.
Before its Venice world premiere tomorrow, some non-critical thoughts.
What Aronofsky has created is his least flashy film. Matthew Libatique’s services were not necessarily needed for this film, which is mostly composed of Brendan Fraser’s titular character sitting on a couch or, at times, a wheelchair.
Fraser plays a severely obese gay man in this very faithful adaptation of Samuel D. Hunter’s divisive play. You can automatically tell that this was originally meant for the stage. There are maybe 5 characters at most here, plus an additional, unseen, pizza delivery guy.
In that respect, “The Whale” is the most classicist film of Aronofsky’s career. Its framing meticulously set-up to let’s its characters breathe a little. It’s a very conversationalist affair, as if the director of “mother!” decided to make the tonal opposite of his last movie. Despite the fat suit, there is sadly nothing deranged or original here.
Fraser’s prosthetic suit is really something, almost cartoonish in its layout. Sadie Sink plays his neglected daughter. He left his wife and daughter for one of his male students, she’s never forgiven him for that, and you can see how messed up she is because of it.
