Jamie Perrett Masquerade of Love
In the hands of his dear old dad this could be a classic .....in his well it still holds up. Not many people write this kind of Rock/Pop these days tbh....

Trent goes from winning an Oscar for a Pixar movie to this... Sounds like it could have come from The Fragile era...

The Courettes Only Happy When You're Gone
Sort of a White Stripes in reverse - male drummer, front woman/guitarist from Brazil. They are usually pretty simple and fun but this song is their take on a Phil Spector Girl Group production and I kind of love this......
Sounds like vintage 1963 which is the whole schtick.....a near perfect recreation of the style/sound/spirit and as far as I know, not a cover:

Best all female band ever .........kind of running past their sell date here with an iffy mid-temp new song a long ways away from their peak ferocity.......getting ready for their big very iffy Summer tour with Dad rock legends (um) Wilco.

2021 is 5 months down and all I've got to show for it is this COVID mask and Julien Baker making me want to pull a Van Gogh on myself - mope, mope, mope - but all is now well - the mask is soon to be gone and one of the worlds best bands - my highest rated group last year (and #2 overall) - is back with a new covers EP to hold us over until their highly anticipated album #3 next year (I guess). Covering Hanoi Rocks .........surprising choice .....as usual they punch up the chorus, to marvelous effect..... The Speedways 11th Street Kids

The Reflectors All Made UpBest. Week. Ever.......and it's Tuesday The Exbats my #3 in 2020 have just signed a NEW record deal - Goner Records - since their previous label folded (Burger Records) and have a new album due in the Fall - and they have my favorite 2021 song too ("Coolsville USA") - leisureworldtapes.bandcamp.com/album/coolsville-usaThe Speedways my #2 in 2020 have a stupendous new EP due end of May (see post above this in the 2021 thread)......and .... The Reflectors - my number 5 in 2020 announce a new record TODAY - their 2nd - also on a new label - Time For Action Records - they were also on Burger Records....... Reflectors album drops July 1st .......song is on Bandcamp below - not a great song ........BUT they don't make sense in individual songs anyway - it's the total feel of their album that matters - and they released 5 of these "planned" new songs last year on a live radio station release ..........and they were VERY promising indeed........ Could be great ......or not......we'll see. Now if we could just get Lucy and The Rats (number 6) to make an album we'd have all 4 of the Power Pop class of 2020 back Best Albums of 20201. Bob Dylan - Rough and Rowdy Ways 2. The Speedways - Radio Sounds 3. The Exbats - Kicks, Hits and Fits 4. Fontaines D.C. - A Hero's Death 5. The Reflectors - First Impression 6. Lucy and The Rats - Got Lucky reflectors.bandcamp.com/album/all-made-up

Geoff Palmer Many More DrugsLast night I called "this week" the best week ever and joked "it's just Tuesday". ....... Now it's Wednesday and - Geoff Palmer - the John Lennon of Power Pop (um) - of The Connection and New Trocaderos fame (sorta) drops a rather stupendous left-field Pop Punk single WITH his buddy and fellow Power Pop royalty Kurt Baker no less ......and pays homage to "Manny, Moe and Jack" the classic song by The Dickies - which he references specifically at the end after ripping the song off up to that point. Oh and Brad Marino - the McCartney to Palmer's Lennon (um) from both those above bands - drops a big new album on June 5th.......this is clearly a dick move right .........or just a friendly rivalry ? (Baker is also on Marino's album and of course was in New Trocaderos too) What a time to be alive!

Snakeheads Shit I Don't Have Time For
Best of year level new single .......the first and last one they'll ever do.
Recorded last year and just released as part of a tribute to their leader - Australia label head/manager/jack of all trades Pete Lusty - who died of cancer.

The Exbats - I Don't Wanna Feel Dead2nd song they've just given away now on compilations in 2021 not even on Youtube - VERY off the radar - not even on their bandcamp page so if you're a fan you may not even know of either - this isn't as good as "Coolsville USA" but this is pretty righteous and sounds like 1966. I literally have no idea what their followup to the fantastic Kicks, Hits and Fits (2020) will sound like now - this is almost psychedelic and "Coolsville" is surf pop ...........but these 2 songs would be just fine on it ......or if they have better ones....maybe they won't be a one hit wonder .....um without a hit I mean secretsocietyworldbroadcast.bandcamp.com/track/i-dont-wanna-feel-dead

Been listening to Erika de Casier's new album Sensational a lot inte the past few days. Really, really good I have to say. It's one of those albums I just want to listen to again and again - uses her voice brilliantly, there's some nice beats and some cracking melodies in there. It's all around just a very pleasant listen, and one of the best releases of the year as of yet.

Cub Scout Bowling Pins Copyright 1-2-3
2nd song from Robert Pollard's alternatively named GBV project - more of a Pop thing - not as striking as "Heaven Beats Iowa" which is hanging around my top songs of the year still ......but still pretty intriguing.........July for the full album Clang Clang Ho!

New music this week from John Mayer, a catchy tune called Last Train Home. Incredible guitar tone in this one, a really good track. Hopefully all songs won't be this short on the new album though. Also a fantastic new song by CHVRCHES featuring Robert Smith, one of their very best I have to say.

Geoff Palmer This MonkeySo-so second single from our part time main man - might not be the stunner that " Many More Drugs" was - but might sound better in context when the album comes out next month - we'll see. This is Palmer in slick, "I should be a star" mode - and he should be - but not so much when he's playing MOR pop ............with Kurt Baker again on bass in this video and Palmer in a cool af Lucy and The Rats T-shirt ...........so now you know what to get me for my birthday, huh? This album is only 10 songs long and seems very designed to limit his "hit or miss" thing - this is 2 songs that reference another song now (The Dickies before, The Pixies here)..........2 are covers (one from Tom Petty).......and the great song "What Would Paul Westerberg Do?" ( Mattsby ) makes its debut on an album here too finally - possibly in a new version (?) Side note : his publishing company is a Westerberg reference too "Walking Bowl Of Punch" Music

Big releases last week for me
Iron Maiden released their first track in six years, The Writing on the Wall. For being one of their singles it's a pretty good song I have to say, digging the main riff and I think Dickinson sounds good. Really nice solo by Smith as well, some of his best work in years.
John Mayer released his new album Sob Rock. Too bad we had heard so many of the songs before, but I really like the album. Last Train Home is growing on me by the minute, I Guess I Just Feel Like is a proper good track (but that we knew) and new stuff like Wild Blue and Shot in the Dark are really, really good. As usual, there's to little actual guitar playing but whenever we actually get some it's pure gold.

Ike Reilly Trick of the Light
The great Ike Reilly - a genuine Rock and Roll hero at ~ 60 (is he 60 yet?) and the first single from his forthcoming album ......not too shabby - his last one was my #1 album of 2018 - and he's often a contender for such esteemed awards (um)

Idk if his sons have ever backed him on an album number before? I know they've come to swirl around the Ike mic from those awesome live perfs they did over quarantine but anyway it makes the song a little xtra sweet. Already seriously stuck in my head, set up shop, and hell, invited to stay for the rest of the summer. glidemagazine.com/259434/song-premiere-ike-reilly-celebrates-family-dysfunction-with-dark-poppy-anthem-trick-of-the-light/Brief interview with the national treasure that is Ike. Do we have an exact date on the album or??

Coach Party Everybody Hates MeYeah that's 3 songs in 3 days in 3 different threads ...... Their frontwoman - Jess Eastwood - is the soon to be crowned Queen of achingly on target and amusingly self-deprecating neuroses: "I wish I had your face and your fnckin' personality"One of 2021's best singles.......2021's most promising "new" band ......

So, the latest Iron Maiden album Senjutsu is a bit of a step down from the very good Book of Souls. Most of the stuff is good, it's great that they're challenging themselves while still keeping a lot of the core attributes that makes Maiden Maiden, but few tracks really stands out as great. The only track that truly stands out for me as of yet is The Parchment which really is peak reunion Iron Maiden through and through - the progressive structure, the numerous guitar melodies and some controlled singing by Dickinson. A competent yet somewhat dissapointing album is my verdict.
However, the reacent CHVRCHES release Screen Violence is really, really good. While the best song remeains How Not To Drown, the album offered a number of fantastic other tracks, mainly songs like California, Final Girl and Nightmares. I also think this is a more consistent album than their previous releases where I think the quality has been very up and down.

The Exbats Coolsville USA
First single release from their followup to the excellent Kicks, Hits and Fits (2020 - my number 3 of that year) - this was out earlier on bandcamp - this album version sounds fuller and richer.......one of 2021's loveliest recordings.......
Album next month......
