The mighty Sleaford Mods drops in a few hours......let's see if they've made an album that matches their decade long run of great singles......meanwhile it's Power-Pop again in 2021, fnck yeah.....
Airport '77s (When You're Kissing on Me Do You Think Of) James McAvoy
Power pop always has written about movie stars and put their names in the title........Matthew Sweet wrote of Winona Ryder .....Kurt Baker sang of Emma Stone and this band has a contender for novelty song of 2021 already......gently dissing McAvoy (he takes his shirt of a lot!) ......dissing movie stars food & wine (creme brulee, chardonnay and pinot noir......and hilariously, his favorite band too (?), Coldplay which I think is a specific diss of something pretentious the band once Tweeted ..........which if that's the case is f'n brilliant.

Chemtrails over the Country Club is absolutely stunning. Some of her most beautiful melodies.
Her and Jack Antonoff should never part.

The Descendents - That's The Breaks
A mere 40 seconds (!) of kicking Trump out of the White House set to their usual frantic pace......they are pushing 60 now.....and yeah if you think that's me saying they make young bands look bad, that sounds about right.
Also, Milo Goes To College turns 40 next year.....gulp

Shame - Nigel HitterAlbum of the year January edition in the "what we need now is a new Talking Heads!, and we need it to be Shame because they are British" .....this is maybe (maybe not) better than Sleaford Mods and the band is here to rival Fontaines DC whose Joy Division poetics could use a Talking Heads rival I guess......both with 2 albums under their belts now.

Chelsea Wolfe and Emma Ruth Rundle released a song together today and it's spectacular. The overall atmosphere, the guitarwork and especially their voices are just brilliant. Would have been awesome to see them do an album together.

Brad Marino - What Do You KnowHmmmmm, a new song by a big deal in Power Pop - at one time anyway and I missed it entirely .......Marino was the McCartney to Geoff Palmer's Lennon (um) in The Connection - he's rarely (never?) brilliant but rarely (never?) is he ever swinging and missing like Palmer - who when he nails it in a way more distinctive way - but only nails it about 60% of the time. Every Marino song follows the same formula for over a decade - very simple, very direct, 2 minutes or close to it and instead of it being annoying it's kind of sweet and disposable - the guy knows what he likes - he's like Coca Cola.......not as popular or as good as that but which um, has a formula too

Cub Scout Bowling Pins - Heaven Beats IowaGBV only made a million albums last year so American National Treasure Robert Pollard has a new one now and a new band (?!?) and it's verrrrrrrrrrrrrrry poppy and kind of weirdly totally wonderful. ............and it cuts off just as it peaks because he invented that ......well be did ......probably my fave song this year, but this year is only 5 weeks old.....um.

The Fall - Rowche Rumble (1981)New, old Fall - album released today..........an oft-bootlegged performance so I'm calling it "new music" because so far 2021 has been lethargic - even though there's a couple of winners in this thread........ Archie will dig this - he's a fan....and these guys sound like Pavement so they could get big right.....

The Modfather, the great Paul Weller - 62 now - drops a great-ish single, album in May - sounding like Bowie a bit, a little like The Cars maybe and absolutely like nobody else but himself.
Legend.....his best single in quite some time.....

Ok, look we're in the 3rd month of the year and the year blows so far......maybe St. Vincent will save the year, because it wasn't (to me) Julien Baker........ Um.
So with that in mind, she sure knows how to tease a single release. This isn't a single (just yet) but it's an intriguing bit of creating your own hype. A trailer ........for a single "Pay Your Way In Pain" coming soon (?).....and a suggestion she's gone very retro.

So good it could be on Pavement's Best of.....and the album may be my review for tomorrow as well.
Hint - it doesn't disappoint.......

The Reigning Sound A Little More TimeHmmmmmm..........one of the exciting and raucous bands of the early 2000s - Time Bomb High School in particular is a great record. This kind of sounds like Dad-Rockish and countrified I guess compared to that....... New album coming on Merge Records soon......which itself is a little weird - only 2 albums in the last 10 years iirc.

Didn't really like the new St. Vincent, it very much had that "white person playing funk" feel to it. Which Bowie pretty much did as well outside of a few of the songs, so I guess the comparisons are apt. You never know what you're going to get with her, it will be interesting to see if the other singles are more of the same or if it's going to be really eclectic like her last one was (which was probably her best in my book). With how rock oriented her shows were last time (even for songs where the studio version wasn't really rock) I was hoping we'd get a noisy guitar album this time. She's a very underrated guitarist.

Palmyra Delran and The Doppel Gang Lucky in Love
So far in 2021 we've seen a bad virus - the virus of depressive and pretentious female singer songwriters who wouldn't know a Pop hook if it spilled homemade almond milk all over their confessional notebooks. FINALLY a vaccine has arrived - short, simple, with a sweet vocal performance, an actual chorus (!) and hummable af..........and actual joy - JOY - for Godsakes!

Brad Marino Even The Score
The history of Rock is written by guys like Brad Marino - his 2nd song this year, album coming - no frills dudes who have been around and have a big rep in this genre - and are never, ever "bad" because they don't have the ambition to fail and who REALLY love Chuck Berry and The Stones.
His bandmate Geoff Palmer - (The Connection/New Trocaderos) has stolen the show from him the last 2 years - he made a better album AND a better EP - where Marino has been coasting and looking like the lesser talent.
But this song is pretty ace and maybe he's figured this solo thing out:

Kero Kero Bonito's single is pretty damn good, I must say. Some really nice synth work going on here.

The Erratix You Don't CareBeluga Records has one of the best bands in the world - The Speedways on their roster - and now a new band who you can see them packaged together with on tours - if touring ever comes back. Total Exploding Hearts worship here - but not that good, calm down ........ potential though and they have the right idea anyway......and a good band name. I dig it...... One of the few Power Pop bands to get it right so far in 2021 along with the Airport '77s .......I assume an album is coming here too....

@3.01
These guys provided my #1 song of 2020, and now they've crafted a solid debut. They are probably what you'd get if Eve Libertine took charge of The Fall (circa 2010), or if Sue Tompkins was still invested in Life Without Buildings. Leafy is their outlier, their I Don't Owe You Anything. Pushing Lithics as the best thing going.
