www.yahoo.com/now/joan-micklin-silver-director-crossing-223352497.htmlShe was 85y/o. One of my very favorite female filmmakers ever. The delicate, detailed, poignantly acted Hester Street was her debut which was self-distributed and a success, even Oscar nominated (Carol Kane). She then did a perfectly enjoyable little movie at 45m, Bernice Bobs Her Hair with a wonderfully funny Shelley Duvall perf. That's available on Prime/Youtube. Her next features were the Altmanesque journalist drama Between the Lines, the Annie Hall esque Chilly Scenes of Winter (on Youtube!), with a terrifically perplexed John Heard perf, and a very lovely very New York romance in Crossing Delancey. She did other work but those are her best I believe and all are smoothly helmed and worth seeing and have a lot of thematic crosscurrents.

Sad to hear. Unsurprisingly she was always an underrated underappreciated filmmaker in her time. Chilly Scenes of Winter in particular is quite an unsung, less talked about gem that deserves more appreciation. RIP Mrs. Silver!

It's sad that she didn't get enough chances to direct more films. "Chilly Scenes of Winter" is an overlooked gem. Though one can call almost all of her filmography as underrated, with a possible exception of lovely "Crossing Delancey" which got some awards recognition and a modest box office success. "Behind the Lines" in particular is an interesting one, with an early charismatic performance by Jeff Goldblum. I'm still yet to catch up some of her TV work in the 1990s but "A Private Matter" is worth to check out and Sissy Spacek was amazing (it's also on Youtube!).
RIP.

Crossing Delancey was lovely. Want to see Chilly Scenes of Winter. Female directors from this era never got the careers they deserved. RIP

I stumbled across Crossing Delancey in 1990 and what a treat it is. Amy Irving is a delight and quite a stunner. And how could you not like like her bubbie? Practically steals every scene she is in. And of course "the pickle man", Peter Riegert, is a low key gem. I love movies like this that get under your skin and stay their forever. R.I.P. Joan. Ya did good kid.
