Finished up the 1970s a while ago, but took a long time to post this. Probably my favorite decade so far since starting in the 1920s. Maybe not super consistent as some years are really, really lame (like 1970, which is maybe my least favorite year for film ever), but the highs are just so damn great and plentiful that it's hard not to love it on the whole. Plus, two of my all-time favorite years for film are here (1974 and 1976), with 1974 maybe being my favorite year overall.

Below are my decade line-ups, but would love to see what you all consider your favorites of the decade as well!

I extended the big eight categories to 12 and Picture to 15 simply due to the massive volume of what I watched in this decade compared to prior decades.

Such a shame I couldn't find a subtitled version of The Hourglass Sanatorium. Really seems like a film I'd have loved. Also really want to seek out some Angelopoulos at some point, just a shame his work is so hard to track down (at least here in the states).

Love the mentions for Mastroianni (A Special Day, not seen the other), Carstensen, Mira, Solonitsyn (for both Supporting performances), Andersson, Redgrave, and of course Leachman. Also Paolo Bonacelli was the MVP of Salo for me as well, so I'm happy to see him make the cut for you.

Definitely quite a lot to still check out from your list. Thanks for sharing!

I'll throw something together later. Any excuse to throw together another damn list is a good one.

Reeeeally love some of your BP mentions. All the President's Men gets passed over too much. One of the greatest paranoia thrillers of its time and not just because it was all true (but that certainly amplifies the weight of it). Pakula never reached those heights again IMO. I'll never forget those scenes in the garage with Deep Throat. "Follow the money." Get boosebumps even now thinking about it. And Suspiria! Love it to death. Harold and Maude is a sweet mention too. Kind of flies under the radar but it's such a lovely oddball of a film. Cort and Gordon are wonderful together, and Pickles is quite underrated. Love the dark comedy but it's also very loving.

and of course it's lovely to see Weir in your directing lineups. :iloveu:

and I'm soooo glad I'm not the only one who prefers Tess's cinematography to Apocalypse Now. By razor margins, yes (we talked about how great '79 was), but still, I thought I was the only one!

Haha I'm in the same boat, I love throwing together lists! It's like a pastime I'll never admit to loving, but... you know.

Thanks! I loved the heck out of my BP line-up this decade, even if a lot of the choices were probably really popular picks, but they were just so good and I've loved a lot of them for a long time. I used to be in that group that dismissed All the President's Men as just a decent account of historical events and nothing more, but since seeing it on the big screen a few years back it's steadily grown as an all-time favorite (if I ranked my BP line-up, it'd land at #4 - and for reference #1 and 2 are in my all-time top 10). I'm obviously a big Pakula fan as you can judge from my line-ups, and it's a shame that it seems he never reached those heights either. That "Paranoia Trilogy" was one of the great trifectas of all-time. Still excited to check out Sophie's Choice and The Pelican Brief eventually as I've never seen those.

Suspiria is just a masterwork of the sensory experience. Script isn't anything to go nuts over (though it's better than it gets credit for), but damn if isn't just one hell of a wild ride. And Harold and Maude really hit hard watching it this time. It's just such a sweet and beautiful film so far ahead of its time. Really feels like one of a kind, and Ruth Gordon's performance obviously as you can see I loved a lot (though it was really tough not giving Ullmann a second decade win in a row, though I made up for it by giving her three nods lol). Pickles was great as well as Eric Christmas' incredibly miniscule performance. Great work all around.

Yes! Weir shocked the hell out of me. I've always been a fan as I love Truman Show, Dead Poets Society, and Witness, but he showed a really different side with Picnic and I was here for it. Excited to check out a lot of the rest of his work I hadn't seen before, like Gallipoli.

Double yes for Tess! I went into '79 figuring my Cinematography line-up was just going to be the neverending battle between Apocalypse Now and Alien and then Tess came in just gorgeous as I've ever seen a period piece and it made the decision easy for me.

Excited to see what your lists look like!

I'm saddened by the lack of Liv Ullmann (though Thulin is just as amazing in Cries and Whispers for my money), but beyond that I love these! Obviously happy to see the Last Picture Show love and Jerry Goldsmith winning Score (a top 3 all-time score imo). That Production Design top 2 is sexy as hell too. Also super cool to see Zero Mostel get some love, he was so great in that film.

That's kind of the beauty of Picnic at Hanging Rock - you're never really 100% sure what it's about. It's easily one of the most mysterious films I've seen in that it just drips with an atmosphere of mystery through nearly every frame. I've always enjoyed Weir's work, but never knew he had something so profound in him. Highly recommend it. Especially as I see you're a fan of Eraserhead, I feel like Picnic is a great appetizer to Lynch's style.
