Since I created an Overrated thread, this is its happier positive-vibe cousin........whatcha got MAR........ Emilia Clarke - Above Suspicion - A sexed-up noir star turn that most people missed and those who saw it just shrugged. Their loss because this is not just one of the years surprises, it is the white Southern trash performance of the year too and it's never a caricature or mannered. Nina Hoss - The Audition - Said it before, I'll say it again - she is on the shortlist of best actresses working right now along with the usual suspects ( Blanchett, Haenel, Streep, Huppert etc.) - and Hoss is a tour de force here........ at times scary af and at other times achingly vulnerable and poignant. No other performance I saw in 2020 turned on a dime like this one - it's nodworthy.

The entire cast of Fanny Lye Deliver'd, in particular these two legends who deserve to be cleaning up the season.

I don't think Mark Rylance is going to get anywhere near the amount of credit he deserves for Waiting for the Barbarians

Allison Janney in Bad Education! My favorite performance I've seen of her (and I love everything she does!) I'd like to pretend she won the Oscar for this over I, Tonya

I think Christopher Abbott in Possessor deserves more attention -- he absolutely goes for broke in that movie in a way that's gripping to watch and at times even disturbing.
The two leads in The Vast of Night are also very underrated, especially Sierra McCormick who practically runs an acting marathon in that opening switchboard scene. Yes they are just Sorkin-y fast-talking performances but they're done so well that they make the film exhilarating to watch when nothing visually interesting is happening.
Odessa Young was just as good as if not better than Elisabeth Moss in Shirley.

I thought Mia Goth was a bit of a comedic masterclass in "Emma" - she's not only the heart of that movie but also the comedic centre of it.
Another highly entertaining and hilarious turn is Hugh Grant's in "The Gentlemen" - the definition of a sublime movie-stealing supporting performance.
Most of the praise for "Hillbilly Elegy" fell upon Glenn Close but for me it's Amy Adams that actually was the best thing about it, portraying a highly flawed and often fucked-up character with genuine understanding which allows you to see why she's that way.
Last but not least is John David Washington in "Tenet" - plenty of people called him a boring lead but I thought he was charismatic, cool and smooth as heck, delivering the perfect amount of mystery, empathy and awesomeness that character was supposed to elicit.
And I dunno how underrated his performance actually is, but Bill Burr should be in the thick of Supporting Actor awards talk for "The King of Staten Island".

Michael Keaton in Trail of the Chicago 7 and Hugh Grant in The Gentlemen won't get as much love as they deserve, I think.

Jean Dujardin & Adele Haenel in Deerskini haven't watch a ton of films from this year but yeah, Dujardin in Deerskin is probably my favorite performance I've seen to this point. Fucking great.

with which in particular? woops! I totally fucked up the quote there, I was attempting to keep only your mention of Talia Ryder from Never Rarely Sometimes Always in the quote, but I guess I accidentally deleted it, heh. But yeah, she really stood out to me in that film.

More unrated than underrated, Jane Alexander in The Man in the Woods (2020) a small, experimental B&W campus noir, that I can't figure whether I liked or hated, but she gives a really good supporting perf as the cultivated, wistful wife of the school headmaster. I like how her age factors into the looking back glow of her but not in some ways, like how she chauffeurs a buncha college girls around - they should be driving you around! Anyway, Ellen Burstyn in Pieces of a Woman has been getting all the legend love but this a better perf has gone totally ignored.

This is finally coming on streaming sites and theaters too (now?!?!?) - ridiculously underrated and kicked to the curb modern noir film that was shot like 3+ years ago (wtf) - a great performance by Clarke ...........and a good Jack Huston too. Sophie Lowe from Blow The Man Down is in it also.......worth keeping in mind........ Release Date (Theaters): May 14, 2021 LimitedRelease Date (Streaming): May 14, 2021
