He’s clearly has tremendous talent and his run for ‘09 to ‘15 was pretty great. Last 5 years have been completely downhill though. Do you think he’ll get his career back on track? Is going back to indies or doing prestige tv the answer? I feel he just needs to pick better projects in general. I don’t blame him for trying to become a commercial star but obviously that’s not really in the cards. I’d love for Tarantino to give him another role in his next film.

Whatever he does, I hope he will go full frontal again.

It was that eagerness to become a big commercial star that undid him. He had a good thing going for himself as a prestige actor. But the failures of Assassins Creed (which he produced himself) and The Snowman set him back a long way. Actually, even his last prestige thing (The Light Between Oceans) failed as well.
He's not a star. But he's got two Oscar nominations for acting, so he can probably recover in some form. Choose projects more carefully. Do more ensemble things, so the full weight isn't on you if the project fails. Probably try to get back to working with Steve McQueen again real soon, who got him 1 of those Oscar nods and another of his most acclaimed performances. Prestige TV is another route. But even though he is not Daniel Day-Lewis, this is one of the reasons DDL probably stayed strictly in the prestige lane instead of trying to chase box office clout as well. Because if it goes wrong, it can hurt your prestige as well.

Next Goal Wins looks like it could be good for him. He probably shouldn’t go the mega budget film route anymore though, or just accept supporting roles in really huge movies that way if they fail, it’s not on his shoulders. I could also see him going the prestige tv route at some point as well.

He'll be back I guess. Talented, accomplished and good looking. It's a matter of choices...

He has 2 Oscar nominations, been a part of two big franchises, married to Alicia Vikander and has a massive dick... I think he'll be ok.
In all seriousness though, he's only been in 1 film in the last 3 years. He decided to take a step back from acting for a little bit and focus on being a race car driver. I think Next Goal Wins will be a good return to form for him.

The box office failure of Steve Jobs still stings. That movie and that performance deserved better.

His next most promising thing is Next Goal Wins (maybe it will come out in 2021,who knows).
But honestly, I have no idea how much a Taika Waititi sports comedy (a Golden Globes thing at best?) will do to regain his prestige, especially considering how badly Jojo Rabbit and its Oscar win in the Screenplay category have aged.
We'll see, maybe a possible reteam with Steve McQueen may have a more significant and positive impact on his career, they seem to have a Scorsese/DiCaprio kind of thing, I think they'll work together again in the future.

I don't know why it wouldn't, it has already finished filming as far as I know. I don't think his Oscar win 'aging badly' will have that much of an effect on Taika, the industry still absolutely loves him.

Yeah I didn't like the movie very much, but I think it's way too early to say that the Oscar win aged badly. You're 100% correct that the industry still loves Taika, and he'll likely get a Star Wars film at least, probably a trilogy, in the next few year whenever things get back to normal, and they start to do more outside of The Mandalorian. The last couple of SW films might have not done that well, but it's still a huge thing especially if he gets his own trilogy which I suspect he will, if he wants it.

Plus there is AKIRA which may never see the light of day but you never really know. Dude is set for the next decade it would seem.

BUMP
I owe Fassbender an apology. Just got done watching his Macbeth film and he is legit. He was spitting Shakespeare lines with ease. He was a total boss in that film. Was very impressed with his performance in that film.
Also, I think his career WILL turn around now that he is linking up with David Fincher for The Killer. Can't believe I ever doubted this guy. He'll be fine.

What frustrates me so much about Fassbender's Macbeth is that everyone in that movie is on an entirely different wavelength from each other, and no one is really gelling with each other. Beautifully shot and costumed, and I think Cotillard was nom-worthy, but I feel like it was a film that was somewhat less than the sum of its parts. But Fassbender is going hard on it, and he has his moments for sure.

He'll be fine. I think it was fair to doubt him. He's a talented actor, but he's not a movie star, which is what a lot of his choices suggested he was trying to be (seriously, Assassins Creed!?!). With someone like Fassbender, it's about knowing his lane. Nobody is going go out of their way to watch him in something like The Snowman. He's never going to be some Brad Pitt-esque movie star, which he was clearly hoping to achieve. There have been a lot of actors like Fassbender in the history of movies, who were good actors, but we're never truly going to be embraced as movie stars

But the OP's question was "do you think Michael Fassbender will revive his career?".... he literally just got a lead role in a David fucking Fincher film! (That is HUGE for him) I would say his career is on the right path as of now. Will he ever be as big of a star as Leo or Brad? No but he'll be fine (has 2 Oscar nominated roles, X-Men films and was the MVP of Prometheus which also made bank at the box office etc etc)

I think Fassbender has an edge to him that makes it harder for him to play ordinary Joes, or at least to make people identify with him in big roles as leading man. Reminds me of Kevin Bacon that way. He can even be a sympathetic villain (see Magneto), but not to be the next Di Caprio or Brad Pitt.

I think his career has been more about relatively poor choices dominating than him lacking starpower. I expect him to every so often put out a great performance, but I don't think Fassbender will have huge runs of like 7 straight bangers.
