Sounds like Denzel and the family really appreciated the recognition bestowed by the NYT, judging by John David's statements . Curious to hear what Denzel himself says if it's ever brought up in an interview, which I assume it will be at some point.

He’ll probably be honored by it and try to be modest about it but we know he’ll be thinking “yeah that’s me”..lol. I mean when you’re ranked in a list by the NYT like that where they obviously put some time into it, you know he’s going to be feeling some type of way about it. In the video you could see John David Washington was proud by that recognition for his pops. Isabelle Huppert who’s been celebrated for decades was giddy and honored by the list so I can see Denzel being the same. You think we’ll ever see Denzel and Huppert in a movie together?

Yeah, he'll likely downplay it and do his usual "God gives the reward, man gives the award" spiel . But he knows it's a big deal for him, because of the source (as you say, Huppert has been recieving accolades from around the world for decades, yet being acknowledged by the NYT so highly still stunned her). He's a competitive dude. He's in this game to be known as the greatest of all-time, as are all the greats.

Maybe seeing the pendulum swing towards Denzel in the "greatest living actor" perception in certain influential circles, will spur DDL out of his "retirement" (I'm pretty sure he's a competitive dude as well). If that's the case, we all win. I always assumed he'd be back, but it'd be nice if it was sooner rather than later.

Seriously though..I think it would be great to see Denzel and DDL in a film together before they're gone. I think it would be a shame to see those two never share the screen together.

I think it would be a shame to see those two never share the screen together. Now I'm imagining PTA making an international mystery film where he finally puts Washington in the leading role, and you're watching the film and delighting that Denzel finally gets his moment with one of the greatest directors of actors alive, until he turns a corner and comes face to face with Daniel Day-Lewis in a dark alley and you realize, "Holy fuck, it's a remake of The Third Man."

I think it would be a shame to see those two never share the screen together. I don't think it'll ever happen because of DDL's sparse working pattern (and "retirement" of course). But, y'know, lots of famed greats never shared the screen together, and even when they did, it could kinda suck (like Marlon Brando and George C Scott in The Formula or Al Pacino and Anthony Hopkins in Misconduct), so sometimes you are better off not seeing two Titan level actors get together in something you never want to watch again. So yeah, it'd be nice if it happened, but I'm fine if it doesn't. Denzel has worked with more than enough greats for me, even though there are a few I also wished he'd worked with.

You may say this in partial jest, but this is kinda the only way I see Denzel and DDL working together. A director DDL holds in particularly high esteem and is reluctant to say no to ( so PTA, Spielberg, Scorsese) will have to initiate a film/project with the specific intent of getting both of them to act in a movie together.

DDL and Denzel need to find their own Butch Cassidy, or Heat, or Irishman type of film. Agents or filmmakers who are hidden in these film forums, do it!

The list that keeps on giving...isn’t it? It is isn't it. It's almost like Greatest Actor Of The 21st Century is being treated like his official title now . Here's another: Interestingly enough, not long after this list dropped there was some Twitter survey by a blue check mark asking whom the top 5 actors of all time were. There were well over a thousand replies, and apparently the consensus name that appeared in the majority of those replies was Denzel. He was such an overwhelming and automatic consensus pick, that it got one Twitter poster to post this funny response, wondering if everybody thought Denzel was Laurence Olivier, Marlon Brando and Meryl Streep rolled onto one

Dubbed the “Greatest Actor of the 21st Century by the New York Times, King Lear marks Denzel’s fifth trip to Broadway this century”..lol

Well Scrud, I’m glad you were able to recover from fainting to post this! Its dope that he was the first name she thought of for actors she still wants to work with. Hopefully it can happen at some point.

Hopefully, it does happen at some point. Kidman is a power player as a producer these days. I feel like she is in a position to actually speed up the process by initiating a film project with one of the several companies she has production deals with ( HBO, Hulu, Amazon) with a role so juicy for Denzel that he couldn't say no (similar to how Julia Roberts initiated Leave The World Behind with Sam Esmail through her production company, and got Denzel onboard).

Agreed, like I've said before if Kidman wanted to work with Denzel, I felt she would have to bring a project with a role/director attached that would intrigue him to come onboard. Julia Roberts showed it could be done, although I'm sure their friendship and desire to work together again played a part.

I agree that Roberts had a built in advantage of a longstanding friendship with Denzel to get him to commit to a project . Though I'm pretty sure Denzel would find the prospect of acting with Kidman enticing, even without that personal relationship. But yeah, the material, role and filmmaker would be the primary things that Denzel would look at. Kidman is pretty good at attracting auteurs. Maybe she can get the rights to some great book or story and entice someone like Robert Eggers (whom she just worked with on The Northman) or Yorgos Lanthimos to direct. That kind of package deal (with a strong role for him to play) might do the trick.

Seeing Denzel in one of Lanthimos' weird, off-beat movies would be something..lol
