That’s interesting that people suspect that was Daldry. Would make sense as you and others said he worked with Coleman and Zimmer on The Crown so that would fit. Also explains why this director holds Washington in very high regard, because Daldry did try to persuade Denzel to do a West End production of An Inspector Calls years ago. Daldry is probably one of the duller Oscar guys ever, that him voting for Denzel for best actor, would probably give him extra brownie points in my view, lol.

Denzel's Oscar Clip was pretty exceptional (and I thought he had many stronger scenes in the film than the one they chose, so that says a lot). He really is one of the best Shakespearan actors alive.
Lot of the comments and quotes saying he should have won the Oscar as well.

Classic Denzel Washington movie are finally starting to get their flowers from movie snobs/cinephiles . After his film with Mira Nair, Missisipi Massala just got a Criterion release this month, Critierion have announced another great Denzel film, Devil In A Blue Dress will be joining the collection in July. A terrific Los Angeles set neo-noir that I always felt should be rated alongside Chinatown and LA Confidential in terms of it's level as a film. It's great to see it getting it's due from Critierion.

I can't wait for the Man On Fire Criterion release. I have a feeling it's going to happen at some point, and Tony Scott will deserve it

Criterion's out there doing the good job. I'm thankful they were able to save Missisipi Massala, which was close to being a near lost film in some form, and now they're doing Devil in a Blue Dress. Hopefully the remastering efforts are genuinely good.

To my mind, Denzel and Sarita are one of the most beautiful onscreen couples in cinema history.

Liam Neeson talks once again about how much he admires GOAT Denzel, whom he calls "our Greatest Movie Star ", and says he's seen him in practically everything (ie stage as well) and loves his Equalizer films www.slashfilm.com/846687/memory-star-liam-neeson-impersonates-robert-mitchum-and-shares-the-one-time-he-was-miscast-interview/"Liam Neeson has a wonderful Robert Mitchum impersonation (as seen below). At one point during our interview with the actor, he flashed his hand across his face and he suddenly had that immediately recognizable Mitchum expression — droopy and unamused. It was impossible not to burst out laughing upon seeing it. Both times. During a brief interview with Neeson, he lit up talking about some of his favorite actors, like Mitchum and Denzel Washington, whose footsteps he recently followed by playing Raymond Chandler's iconic gumshoe, Philip Marlowe, in the upcoming (and appropriately titled) "Marlowe." What are some other actors you admire who you think have that strength and sensitivity you like? It's interesting. Yeah, Burt Lancaster. Robert Mitchum did too. I know he did have a quality that was bordered on vulnerability, that made him a great actor, I think. Mitchum was fantastic, a big hero of mine from when I was a teenager. There was just something about him I liked. And who else now? Who else has got that? Denzel Washington. I mean, Denzel's a fantastic actor, probably our greatest movie star in this country I think. I've seen him on stage. I've seen a lot of his films. Love those "Equalizer" films. I mean, Antoine Fuqua, love those movies. Denzel could do that too. He can show a strength and a solidity and touch on the vulnerability, which is incredibly watchful.

I remember when I saw A Walk Among the Tombstones and The Equalizer the same day in theaters -- a damn fine double-feature. The former is one of Neeson's finest films with such wonderful mood and tone, and I do wish that Denzel would do something that evoked that same gloomy noir feel. Hell, I'd like to see Washington take on a classic detective out of Chandler or Hammett someday -- he already did Easy Rawlins, but let's see him take a crack at Marlowe.

To be fair, I think Denzel has done pretty much every variation of detective fiction out there, so while it'd likely be entertaining, I don't think it'd be the most productive use of the time he has left at his age to do Marlowe. I'd prefer to see more stabs at Shakespeare....or whatever stories auteurs like PTA or Cuaron or Steve McQueen could come up with that take him in slightly different directions than he's already gone in his career for the most part. That was the beauty of his collaboration with Joel Coen, or even Dan Gilroy.

Noir is my favorite genre and I love when someone with an auteur's flair takes it on, and it doesn't require too much production time. Washington's aging out of the action flicks, but he can still do sleuth pictures. Would I rather he did other genres? Sure, but that doesn't mean that those auteur-led projects can't be in territories he's explored before.

It's nice to see the respect some of these actors ( Neeson, Daisy Ridley etc) are putting on Antoine Fuqua's name. He's not a director that cinephiles put in particularly high esteem (like Tony Scott when he was alive, though that mat be slowly changing), but anyone who appreciates the skill it takes to make extremely watchable, character driven action films as consistently well as Fuqua will give the man his props.

Jake Gyllenhaal loves the guy, he's been in two films with him and I think they said they would love to work together again as well.

My dream project for them is an existential noir about two aging hitmen, the best in the business for decades, who have long been rivals but always respected each other from afar. One of them is dying from a terminal disease, and the other is beginning to suffer from early-onset dementia. Both men know there is very little time left, and they decide that rather than letting nature take its grisly course, they both anonymously set up hits on themselves requesting the other take the contract. Then it becomes a chess match where they truly see who the best is, while also dealing with their impending mortality. Think of it as a mixture of Heat, The Father and Ikiru.

A Denzel / Daniel Day-Lewis team-up, where they both play contract killers with some genuine problems, has the potential to be so cool. Think of it as being titled The Long and Narrow Pathway, or some shit.

“Nothings free in this world Jake….not even lavish condos” Now I am imagining Denzel and DDL in a suburban comedy about two feuding neighbors trying to one-up each other by buying increasingly expensive home items. Basically that CAT scan skit in The Ten with two Oscar-winning heavy-hitters. And then when both men have utterly bankrupted themselves and are sitting in the wastes of their home lives, Nicolas Cage moves in across the street and the cycle renews.

The plot heavily reminds me of that abandoned Nicolas Cage / Will Smith comedy that was listed for a long time, with them as feuding neighbors, which supposedly somehow evolved into I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry.

A casting director in this article says she's repeatedly approached Denzel about doing television shows and he's repeatedly rebuffed her said " " I don't do TV".
www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/awards/story/2022-05-24/youre-gonna-need-a-bigger-net-how-the-surge-in-streaming-affects-castingCold Blooded
Guess he truly doesn't give a shit about Emmys or Triple Crowns. He comes from that old school generation where you only did TV as a route to get a movie career or pay your bills ( which he did for several seasons of St Elsewhere) or having to move into TV as a movie star meant you were over the hill. I don't neccesarily agree with his stance, as I think the quality of TV has improved dramatically in recent years, but I can understand why he still feels that way (as he probably doesn't keep up with TV trends). Still, he may relent and end up doing a TV movie when he's 80 or something!lol!
