The AFI usually announces it's Top 10 Films every awards season, and it's considered a fairly big deal. If you are on it, your Oscar (and Best Picture) hopes are often solidified, and if you aren't, it can often be seen as a sign of weakness.
But only once in this cycle, did the AFI decide to go full Golden Globes/SAG and hold a televised awards ceremony, complete with acting awards. That was in 2002, for the 2001 movie season. The Acting Winners that year were:
Actor Of The Year (Movies) Denzel Washington- Training Day
Actress Of The Year- (Movies) Sissy Spacek- In The Bedroom
Featured/Supporting Actor Of The Year (Movies)- Gene Hackman- The Royal Tenembaums
Featured/Supporting Actress Of The Year- Jennifer Connelly- A Beautiful Mind
Actor Of The Year - (TV movie or mini-series) Jeffrey Wright- Boycott
Actress Of The Year - (TV movie or mini-series) Judy Davis- Life With Judy Garland: Me And My Shadows
Actor Of The Year (TV series) James Gandolfini- The Sopranos
Actress Of The Year ( TV series) Edie Falco- The Sopranos
At the time, because of the weight and prestige carried by the AFI, their acting awards (and awards for other things like director/screenwriter/editor etc)instantly felt like a major precursor, so it was strange to me that they discontinued it and just went back to selecting a top 10 of movies and TV shows.
I wonder if they maybe recieved feedback from guilds like SAG, A.C.E, DGA that these awards muscled in on their territory and that was a partial reason for discontinuing them. Overall, but especially in terms of the acting awards, they would have been a huge precursor had they remained.

Their one-off status doesn't really give us any sort of idea one way or the other on being a useful precursor, at least no more than, say, that Palm Springs International thing where studios buy achievement prizes for certain actors that just so happen to correlate to them having Oscar campaigns that same year. It would likely be useful in figuring out who has the most buzz, but that's about it.

It would likely be useful in figuring out who has the most buzz, but that's about it. I think we can correlate from the value award watchers and the industry at large place on the AFI Top 10 every year, that they probably would have had significantly more weight as a precursor than the Palm Springs International.The AFI is the most revered film institution in America outside of AMPAS. It ain't the Santa Barbara Film Festival. It is far more respected than the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (who run the Golden Globes). When they draw up any sort of list, it commands global attention and is voted on by the entire industry. I think it feels very obvious they could easily muscle into major precursor territory, hurting maybe BAFTA, as they were just turning into an Oscar precursor at that stage. |

Not sure this would have developed into a big precursor tbh - there's no legacy to it like the big 3 - Oscar, BAFTA, Globe and with SAG added it's just maybe 1 award too many and to establish a legacy isn't easy.
Originally the AFI was an educational body so maybe it didn't mesh with their overall goal as a teaching body........their top 10 movies are fun for what misses sometimes rather than matches the Oscars sometimes (Knives Out, Richard Jewell, The Farewell - last years Winner in 2019).
So where sometimes you see a movie and say "Maybe a Globe, not an Oscar" with AFI you can say "Maybe AFI, not an Oscar" a bit too for a couple of movies a year. For acting maybe it would have been ok, but what eventually happens is all awards - especially modern awards - they get corrupted........"predicting the Oscar nominees" is the dirty little secret in how awards bodies vote.

Always wondered why they only did that the one time and just went back to their top 10 movies/tv shows. Look like they ended up getting 2 of the 4 the same as the Oscars with Washington and Connelly, and awarded Hackman for The Royal Tenanbaums although its curious why they had him in the featured actor category. On the tv side of things, I think Gandolfini and Falco both won Emmys that TV awards season if I’m not mistaken. |
