Both have been major movie stars, but ceded something about their primacy. Cruise 20 years ago was an idol, and Smith a few years later was in the same place. Is turning down QT a career-killer/staller, even if the films aren't good? Thoughts? Did these guys just get so arrogant they didn't think the director mattered? What's going on?

I personally think it's Smith. Cruise after 1999 for whatever reason decided to stop being a serious dramatic actor and went into "full action movie star" mode, but still decent choices.
Smith instead just made plainly bad choices in his career (turning down Django Unchained, doing MIB 3, After Earth, Collateral Beauty, Bright, and other forgettable stuff). To me Smith is the one more oblivious.

Easily Smith. Failed Oscar baits and flop tentpoles left and right as well as turning down films like Django and The Matrix.

I think with Cruise it was a combination of his longtime publicist leaving and replacing her with his sister, and his second divorce and losing the court of public opinion that caused him to take a different direction. I agree though that he’s still made decent choices, for the most part.

Tom Cruise has had a great career and is still doing well. He's getting all the stunt stuff he clearly loves out of his system so long as he can do them, and so long as he has the cache to get them made.
Smith, on the other hand, has had a spotty record from the jump and seems to prioritize his easy to digest image over starring in quality work. The byproduct of that being he was at one point the biggest star on Earth, but 25 years on are any of his films really classics? Maybe the first Men in Black and that's it?

Criticizing Cruise is the kind of elitist shit this forum does simply because they're annoyed he doesn't do prestige movies anymore. His hit/miss ratio is still very good.
Smith's filmography obviously isn't very good, but he's always been more interested in sustaining a marketable brand and has succeeded in that respect.

Well given Biden won all the states I mentioned and Depp's career is basically over, I was at least correct in my analysis.
