Riveting stuff. I used to play chess a lot in my childhood and and i occasionally play it on my phone but i picked my phone immediately and played a game right after finishing the series. It gave me that urge but i realized i know nothing of those Sicilians, Queen's gambits even though i played it a lot. But even for someone who likes the game it felt a tiny bit stretched. Should've done it in 6 episodes or so.
Does portray some weighty themes but nothing we haven't seen before and there were familiar story beats pertaining to any sports drama but Anya Taylor-Joy's performance, the cinematography, costumes and production design kept it a notch above.

Well done to Anya Taylor Joy for picking up some well deserved best actress nominations so far (Golden Globes, SAG), but a bit disappointed Marielle Heller has been overlooked to date.
Happy for Bill Camp to get a SAG nod though.

Bill Camp getting that SAG nomination was the highlight of this clusterfuck of an awards presentation. And yeah, I think it's Anya's prize to lose at the Globes and SAG.

I don't think Taylor-Joy is a shoo-in at either. Michaela Cole and her snubs at the Golden Globes outraged the industry. It was all anybody could talk about on social media yesterday. I believe that gives Cole a big advantage at SAG now, and if I was a betting man, I'd say Cole will win the SAG. I make Taylor-Joy the slight favorite at the Globes, but they really loved The Undoing and they really love Kidman, so I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if The Undoing won all it's nominations. Also, they nominated Taylor-Joy for Emma, so they have the opportunity to award her for that instead.

This made the middle school chess club part of me very happy. I also love how it literally just lifts the plot of Rocky III (with some of IV mixed in): loved one dies immediately after losing a match, former opponent helps train the main character by suggesting a fresh approach, self-doubt creeps in, eventual redemption..... only Rocky didn't fuck Apollo.
The part of me that watched Searching for Bobby Fischer a million times in middle school was screaming internally (as Ben Kingsley's character would) when Hipster Harry Styles proposed a game of speed chess for the first time because it was obvious how that would turn out..... but of course it's a set-up for satisfying payback later on. Could have done without the constant flashbacks to her birth mother, which seemed rather superfluous after a while. The return to the orphanage was one of my favorite scenes though - her discovery of the newspaper clippings that Mr. Shaibel kept packs a real emotional wallop. The addiction stuff was a little weak, and I felt like it would have been better if the show had compressed some of the other material, and instead fleshed out a different side of Beth's story that perhaps involved her having to redirect her compulsions outside of chess... the show touches a little on the challenge of finding a life outside of chess (but drops it), so I think it would have been compelling to see her channeling that kind of obsessiveness into something else, something that curdles and becomes unhealthy, sort of like how Bobby Fischer's mind kind of soured into conspiratorial, paranoid thinking because it needed something that satisfied his mind in the same way chess did. Perhaps that would have felt too much like mirroring Fischer's story, but I think it still would have been more interesting than the addiction angle. Still, solid stuff overall.

Haha... Taylor-Joy starting off her Golden Globes speech with " Nicole, Cate..." was a big flex. She knows she just beat a pair of industry legends
