What do you think? My heart says Mateen but my head says Rylance.

1. Mark Rylance. A former winner, his character is arguably the audience surrogate, and he's got beaucoup respect in the industry. Most of the other actors' major scenes also involve him in some way, so he's always going to be in the forefront of voters' minds.
2. Sacha Baron Cohen. The most major figure in the film in terms of notoriety. The most outwardly "Acting!" role in the film. Borat 2 momentum.
3. Frank Langella. The villain of the piece, who has several moments of blustering power. Problem is, I don't know if I see Netflix prioritizing him.
4. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Would probably have been a sure thing if he'd had more to do, and frustratingly, the last time we see him, the scene mostly focuses on other people's reactions to him.
5. Michael Keaton. The best scene of the film involves him, but like Abdul-Mateen II, he's probably not around long enough to really make it stick in voters' minds.
Not seeing the others having much of a shot at all.

Rylance. I don't think the others have any chances.

I’m honestly feeling two get in (especially since it appears a lot of the boarder lead/supporting contenders this year are going lead) right now I would bet on Rylance and Abdul- Mateen. Even though I can see Langella (even though I didn’t like him) or Cohen getting in as well. I think Redmayne will be viewed as the defacto lead and miss because of it.

I have a really hard time picturing Cohen missing for this. He was a major selling point for this, one of the few characters with a clear arc, his first serious role, has political goodwill and then got even more exposure by Borat 2 that will only continue to build.
I think we'll likely see two actors getting in for this (maybe 3 if you want to call me delusional).

Frankly, I can see nobody being nominated. But if I had to gamble, I guess Rylance or Redmayne. I don't think Yahya got to do enough, and I think the Borat stuff will only detract from Cohen's campaign for this.

I could see voters taking him less seriously; certainly in the past I could see it having a bigger impact. Borat 2's seemed to be received pretty well all around though. The politics help him too.

He won the Globe for the first Borat and it got nominated for Adapted Screenplay.
