Of the 6 people nominated last year, only Maura Tierney (The Affair) and Constance Zimmer (UnREAL) are eligible again this year since Game of Thrones isn't eligible and Downton Abbey has ended.
I don't watch UnREAL but I do watch The Affair and Maura Tierney didn't have much to do this season, which makes me think she won't make the cut. Then again, Ben Mendelsohn didn't do anything in season 2 of Bloodline but WON, so who really knows with the Emmys?
Anyways, I'm thinking Thandie Newton (Westworld) should be a pretty safe bet. This is Us was a pretty big success at the Golden Globes with both Mandy Moore and Chrissy Metz getting nominated, so they might be possibilities. Since The Americans was finally a success with the Emmys last year, maybe Holly Taylor can finally get nominated. And Orange is the New Black season 4 seemed to have been more acclaimed than season 3, so it'll hopefully do better this year at the Emmys than it did last year. Of course, who would get in? Uzo Aduba is the most obvious choice, but I think Samira Wiley, Natasha Lyonne, and Kate Mulgrew all have a chance as well. It's hard to say when a show has such a big ensemble.
Of course, I like to think that this slot might open up some possibilities for The Leftovers (Carrie Coon if she goes supporting, Regina King) but the new season hasn't even started yet and that still seems doubtful. Also Legion has been a pretty big critical hit so it'd be cool if Aubrey Plaza got recognized, but it's hard to say how well the Emmys would take to a superhero show.
A few other less likely possibilities (and putting some of these actresses as "supporting" is definitely debatable).
Maggie Siff- Billions
Michelle Monaghan- The Path
Abigail Spencer- Rectify
Linda Cardellini- Bloodline
Mackenzie Davis- Halt and Catch Fire
Carly Chaikin
- Mr. Robot
Ellen Barkin- Animal Kingdom
Ruth Negga- Preacher
Anyways, I'd love to hear if anyone else had any predictions.
