In the history of cinema there have been performances (even by Oscar winners) where actors took big swings in films but just ended up being unintentionally hilarious..even in a serious dramatic movie. What are some of your favorite unintentionally hilarious performances? One that comes to mind for me is Jon Voight in Anaconda. Part Scarface, part I don't know what..Voight turns in an epic "paycheck" performance consisting of 5 or 6 different accents. Easily the highlight of the cult b-movie, Voight gives a masterclass in being a ham, and in turn also gives one of the most unintentionally hilarious performances ever. You need protessshun? An all-timer What are some of your faves?

Anaconda's a good one and I just rewatched that movie last week. Part of the films fun is watching Jon Voight's accent become a character in of itself. If we're including hilarious performances not just from known names though, this one from Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is still tops for me.

I also just rewatched Anaconda-- love it!
The cast of The Room has to top this list easily, such a fascinating film. In terms of generally decent films with unintentionally hilarious performances, that's a tougher one. Maybe:
Albert Finney is absolutely ridiculous at times in Scrooge and Murder on the Orient Express I love Rebel without a Cause, but a number of lines in that, especially from Dean and Mineo Kate Winslet in Titanic sometimes Arnold Schwartzenegger in Batman & Robin Gary Oldman in The Fifth Element (and Chris Tucker was the opposite, unintentionally unhilarious) I think it's a great performance, but rewatching Brad Pitt at the end of Seven can make me laugh now
I'm sure there are tons more bit parts in older movies that catch me off guard, but I can't think of any at the moment.

Ooh I know: again I love him, but Sean Astin in The Goonies
Honorable Mention to Wiley Wiggins' nose-rubbing in Dazed and Confused (as directed by Linklater)

Oh god man..I still remember that LOL..I was a big fan of the Mortal Kombat arcade games and I thought the first Mortal Kombat film was one of the best video game adaptations (even though it was just a ripoff Enter the Dragon) but Mortal Kombat: Annihilation just stunk bad. The acting was terrible across the board (Remar was the only decent cast member), the script was so bad Christopher Lambert, Linden Ashby, and Bridgette Wilson decided not to come back, and the dude that played Jax should've never gotten another acting role ever after that. I felt bad for James Remar having to do that. Just all around terrible..but yeah that line reading Musetta Vander is an all-timer.

Those are great choices. Oldman and Tucker were a trip in The Fifth Element..I never thought I'd see an actor create a crazier character than Oldman in a movie like that than Tucker came along. The "What's in the Box" ending scene in Se7en is a classic..I'm sure Pitt would've liked a redo on that one..lol
Another one I thought of was good ole Marky Mark in The Happening. I'm sure Wahlberg was looking forward to extending his range beyond tough guy roles to play a teacher....but it didn't work out for him unfortunately.

It's terrible, it actually makes you appreciate the overly video game silliness that W.S. Anderson brought to the first, but there are some funny moments, and the acting is mostly abysmal sometimes to great levels of lunacy. Plus that goddamn 1990s CGI, it was bad in the first, but they really ratcheted it up to appalling levels in Annihilation. Good choice with Mark Wahlberg in The Happening too. I'm honestly convinced that Wahlberg is one of those performers who knows when he's working with a shitty script just for the paycheck, and mostly plays it off as a troll gag to be as spacey and non-human as possible. It's amusing in something as inherently silly as The Happening, but with say Planet of the Apes, it actually makes the movie even worse.

Could've had a decent movie franchise based on one of the iconic video game franchises ever and you just drop the ball entirely. Yeah The Happening is a tricky one because sometimes it feels like the cast are in on the joke..for instance Wahlberg talking to a fake plant..but you can tell in some parts he’s excited to try his hand at playing a non tough guy role as a science teacher and the rest is history. I felt like Shyamalan was just trolling everyone at that point. I probably need to watch Burtons Planet of the Apes film..I only watched it once and I can’t even remember Wahlbergs performance in that. He was such a non-factor in that film..I just remember Helena Bonham Carter’s character in that.

The Happening is probably one of cinema's greatest jokes, and yet somehow it feels so sincere at the same time, like M. Night genuinely thought he was writing a great "supernatural forces" movie or something. That's why it holds value as such a great "bad movie" a-la an Ed Wood flick or something. I don't really recommend revisiting Burton's Planet of The Apes. Aside from the sets and Rick Baker's marvelous makeup, it's as bad as its reputation might suggest, and Wahlberg's jarring performance certainly doesn't help either.

Considering that Oldman modeled his character on "Bugs Bunny meets Ross Perot", I doubt he was UNINTENTIONALLY hilarious.

LOL! Hercules: The Legendary Journey..one of my guilty pleasure 90s tv shows..remember watching that and Xena:Warrior Princess back-to-back every Thursday. Kevin Sorbo is a limited actor but funnily enough fit in perfect in the silliness of the show and had great chemistry with Michael Hurst who played Iolaus.

Another one of my faves, Oscar winner and veteran character actor JK Simmons as Captain Camp in the 2012 Mark Wahlberg film Contraband. The name of his character is fitting, because JK here gives a campy performance as Camp, the captain of a cargo ship that Wahlberg's character Chris uses to go to Panama to buy $10,000,000 in fake bills and smuggle them back into the U.S. Supplying his character with a Foghorn Leghorn type southern accent, Simmons is hilarious in this film and is clearly having fun getting to go head-to-head in a profanity shouting match with Wahlberg.

For me, the gold standard is Simbi Khali in We Were Soldiers. In particular, the scene where Madeleine Stowe and Keri Russell deliver news to her that her husband is KIA. Her reaction completely undermines the emotional resonance of the entire film, and while I don't necessarily fault Khali herself because someone OK'd that scene to be shot and to be left in the final cut, it's still unbelievably bad. A brief taste.

Although I think the all-time awesomely bad film Samurai Cop can give it a run for its money. Ridiculous, badly edited, racist cliche dialogue, and lousy acting..that film is something else..lol

Movies like Samurai Cop are what bad movie podcasts were basically for. On that same note, I'd add most of Neil Breen's "cinematic" output to that list, in particular Double Down.
