A personal pet actress of mine........Westerberg fanatic/stalker.......Pacino phone buddy........ or something and his Shakespeare co-star.......... Winona Ryder snagged 2 Oscar nods in a row at 24 (!) and worked with Coppola and Scorsese too. The sky was the limit ...........and then nada.......the next thing you know her co-stars are winning Oscars and a five finger discount later.....well.......she's 48 now and has straightened her career out with Stranger Things and an Emmy nod on TV too and her memorable (almost too close for comfort) small part in Black Swan. So where do you come down on Winona Ryder ..........underrated or did time prove her to be a mere flavor of the month for a stretch? Does the work from that hot period give her a pass for being so memorable or no ..........and do you think she has a 3rd act to her career?

I'm of two minds on Ryder. Obviously, I think the way that she was treated in the fallout of her shoplifting scandal was horrific and indicative of the rampant sexism in the industry, which minimized a strong talent (who could be argued as being a defining actress of the 1990s) into being essentially a late-night punchline. I think Ryder's run in the early '90s is excellent, and while I don't think she was necessarily robbed of a win (although I'd say her Jo March shits all over Saoirse's, and I would probably have opted for either her or Sarandon of the 1994 Best Actress lineup), I think the way her career nosedived is a real shame.
But then I think about what parts I think Ryder could've been suited for had that not happened, and there's not really a whole lot of major opportunities I think she missed out on in that wasteland era of the early 2000s. I can't think of many major roles for actresses that Ryder would've been perfect for during that period. Still, Ryder is eminently castable and is very versatile, but she also has a specific type and look that puts her in the forefront of people's minds, and I think she might've had to focus on breaking that conception, because nowadays, her performances often hinge on the sort of broken humanity that was borne out of the way she was treated for so long. She's so good at playing neurotic, emotionally unraveling characters, but I think that casting her is by design at this stage.
To answer your question, though, I think she's rated appropriately as a fine talent who got fucked over by shitty publicity in an industry where something so minor as shoplifting makes you a perennial punching-bag whereas, for her male contemporaries, wife-beating or public alcoholism/drug use gets a pass.

Thought of voting underrated but I voted just right. I think most people think of her as a good actress. Specific things she did might be underrated (I would not have minded her winning for Age of Innocence) but on the whole I think her talent is measured more or less appropriately.
Don't really see much of a comeback happening outside of more TV. Her career nosedived in the 2000's in a way other actresses in her age range's did not. I guess she could always get a good supporting role in a prestige movie and be back in the Oscar race.

Given that she won all of her major awards and nods for (all in all) 4-5 roles which she nailed, I say just right.
She's not considered one of the greatest of her generation and she's not. She is mostly thought to be a fine performer and I agree.
Yeah, it's just right.

Underrated. I still think her best performance is Reality Bites. She's never been nominated for an Emmy btw.

I still believe that she's not always given enough credit for her dramatic performances so I'd say UNDERRATED.

As the tattoo goes, Wino forever!
I love her early career and really get a kick outta her recently. She's great in Age of Innocence, and deserved the Oscar out of the nominees; there's one brilliant moment where she tells DDL she's pregnant, that scene. She puts her head on his lap as if apologizing for trapping him, yet she's hopeful, relieved. It's played very gently. She can ace that straighter part and the innocence looking out type parts like Mermaids, as well as the bizarro raffish satiric parts, Heathers, Roxy Carmichael, etc....
Love her in Night on Earth and Celebrity - Coppola, Scorsese, and Woody Allen in the 90s! And her bit in Looking for Richard where she's surprisingly sexual without even doing much; she's locked into Pacino there. Generally, her "persona" so cool and charming, can usually pick up any technical lack with her....voltage. She's only overrated or way off in some of the prestige-y movies Little Women, The Crucible, Girl Interrupted, maybe some others.
Recently there's her kinda terrific, hurt little perf in Black Swan, she's hilarious especially her reactions in Destination Wedding, and despite how much I laugh at her in Stranger Things it's such a committed and sympathetic perf. She's in some guilty pleasures for me like Alien Resurrection, and great favs like Lucas. And I can even go without mentioning Beetlejuice and Scissorhands. Underrated!!
