Another obvious one that was discussed a while back - Viced I think brought it up back then is DePac in The Pope Of Greenwich Village in 1984 or close to their Godlike peaks as we came or could have ever really come. That's Pacino in the Roberts role and DeNiro in the Rourke role and at that time that had Coppola flirting with directing.... ......but per the rules sticking with the original director (dammit!).......that would be one certainly. 2 things about those guys - their collaborations in Heat and The Irishman to me are smashing successes and in both films they were really the only ones who could play it and it work on a "meta" level as conceived......they might be the most successful "great" actors/great team ever together....at least among people like us, message board types.....I have a weird affinity for Righteous Kill but just excluding that one I mean.....I know not everyone likes The Irishman or Heat but you can't really deny that it has at least a certain cache....and both films get that masterpiece tag a whole lot. Also interesting.....DePac have an uncanny knack of interacting with the GOAT contenders over their careers - DeNiro interacted with ALL of the "big 4" and Brando - he's the only one to do that I believe.......Pacino interacted with DeNiro, Brando, Lemmon, Hackman......and for actresses Streep (both), Lange (DeNiro), Mirren (Pacino), Pfeiffer (both), Sarandon (both), Keaton (both).....Blanchett upcoming maybe for DeNiro.

Damon's out on his ass as well. There's no shortage of strong actors in his generation to replace him with -- hell, if you want a Bah-stan native, I think either Affleck brother would've been much better and more effective at portraying . . . well, anything. My hot take (and I know you aren't a fan of the guy ): Matt Damon gave the best and most nuanced performance in The Departed. Twitchy, sweaty, constantly anxious Leo is one of the least credible undercover cops I've ever seen on film. He should have been outed as the "rat" within 5 seconds if the gangsters were actually seeing the same performance we the audience were. Jack was pure honey-glazed ham, and Marky-Mark, while credible, had zero degree of difficulty involved in his performance. Damon gave great low-key sociopath vibes and he was "behaving" as opposed to Capital A "acting" like Jack and Leo. Ray Winstone's character was more interesting to me than Nicholson's ham. Also, I saw Donnie Brasco the other day and found Depp to be really impressive in a similar role to Leo where you could believe he wasn't undercover.

Gosling, Leo, Bardem, and Denzel in a big ensembley movie with a great script, like L.A. Confidential or The Departed.

There were talks of the Bridge of Spies being made with Gregory Peck and Alec Guinness in the 60s I think. Rylance is flawless but I would have loved to have seen Guinness play that part and act opposite Peck. Swap Peck out with Jimmy Stewart and you got me sold.

I would have loved to have seen both ex-Marine, prematurely-grayed, cinematic pillars of cool Lee Marvin and Steve McQueen go head-to-head in some existentialist, Melvillean/proto-Mann action thriller. I'm imagining two tough-as-nails soldiers of opposing factions waging their own private war in the wilderness, or a Platoon/ Tunes of Glory mashup where they vy for the hearts and minds of a platoon regiment. Similarly, I'd have given anything to see Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo as skilled hitmen pursuing each other across Europe.
