I'm pretty sure that Bale vs Leo is a poll that's already been done and somewhere in the archives Who won?? It actually hasn't happened at least not as "1 to 1 Better Actor" poll......just takes 10 seconds to use the Search function - just sayin' .......but tbh people are probably afraid to make the poll because some killjoys on MAR instead of just voting or ignoring the poll will say "these guys aren't exactly the same!......1 is British!........1 hasn't worked with Scorsese like the other has!.....1 sleeps in pajamas and 1 in sweat pants!....... 1 likes Apple Jacks and 1 likes Cheerios!" Made myself laugh............kidding kidding.......but your smart-ass point is noted pacinoyes you marvelously sarcastic bastard!

Favoritewise, Bridges runs laps around Duvall for me. Up to '90, though, Duvall takes it - he was quite a good character actor at the start, especially that guttural pinned perf in Tomorrow, and then suddenly we're watching a star - an Apocalypse Now taste of it, Tender Mercies a bit, and especially his all-time best Lonesome Dove. I only saw that one in the last year along with A Family Thing and he jumped some notches in my book on the strength of those two and his chemistry with those costars. After Dove, there are some very good perfs but there are a lot of other turns that just blend together in my mind and don't stand out much whereas Bridges seemed to only grow and surprise as an actor, even now.

After Dove, there are some very good perfs but there are a lot of other turns that just blend together in my mind and don't stand out much whereas Bridges seemed to only grow and surprise as an actor, even now. For the most part, after Lonesome Dove, Duvall was a typecast/grizzled supporting actor, who was mainly there to prop up a bigger star/leading man in the better role. Cruise in Days Of Thunder, Douglas in Falling Down, Keaton in The Paper and many more . Vehicles of note for him like The Apostle ( which he had to write and direct himself, which shows how hard things had got for him) became increasingly rare for him. Bridges just continued in that same period as a prestige leading man in vehicles designed to spotlight his character, as he had in the previous two decades. Bridges had the opportunity to grow and surprise because his "look" did not leave him as a mostly typecast supporting actor like Duvall.
To me, these guys are pretty equal overall as actors, despite Bridges leading man status extending his opportunities significantly more. Duvall's peaks are higher, but Bridges is a bit more fun to watch in general.

I mentioned once.........that if Duvall had rightfully won in '97 for The Apostle - to me he is the deserved BA of '97 anyway.......the way many see him would be quite different I think.......he'd be a 2 time BA winner with 7 nominations - that is Dustin Hoffman territory - and while I know some people rank Duvall that highly ............most do not. There's also another thread to be made one day about the character actor vs. lead actor distinction........in many ways there isn't "that" much difference between Duvall and PSH to me.....and no one would think twice if you said PSH was a "better" actor than just about any "leading man" from the 80s onward. We voted PSH that way in our GOAT poll even......there is a intertwined way that Duvall/Dafoe/PSH are linked that's fun to assess and how they anticipate/represent the change to movies with Indie and go back and forth between types of roles etc.

Philip Seymour Hoffman died young and tragically. His reputation is frozen in time right now and viewed through rose tinted glasses because of this (like John Cazale to a lesser extent). We never got to see how his career would have progressed till he was 90 like Duvall. So it's a very different situation. A lot of hugely esteemed star character actors lose opportunities as they get older. Maybe the get typecast or the roles get less interesting. And people/cinephiles who once talked about them like they were the best actors in the world just start to forget about them. Guys like Rod Steiger and George C Scott spring to mind. Their reputations over time dwindled relative to their peaks. In his prime, Steiger was regarded by many to be near the level of Brando. Today, he can't make the top 50 of MAR's Greatest Actor list
Would PSH still get the golden child treatment from many cinephiles if he lived to a ripe old age, and his opportunities may have started to decline? Anything is possible, but history suggests probably not.

Pretty sure the MAR Greatest Actors poll voted on by 40 or so forum members at the time isn't a definitive ranking of anything. There are many similar polls on the internet, all with different results. You seem to think it is gospel as you bring it up everyday as if that ranking is sacrosanct. I get and understand that you are happy Pacino won the thing, but it's really not as big a deal as you seem to think it is

PSH was a great genius, but he's below Denzel and DiCaprio. And Gosling. And possibly Bardem.

It's handy as a shorthand/cheat sheet/our reference, but no poll "matters"........or is..........God forbid "definitive"......no poll is a "big deal" certainly

I would say Duvall. Fair or not he just sticks out more to me due to his all time great filmography. I naturally just lump him in with DePac and Jack because they were all in so many good movies during the same period of time. I think his peak performances are better than Bridges as well. I'd consider Duvall for the top 20 actors of all time whereas while Bridges is a good actor I wouldn't put him that high. Duvall has also played so many kinds of characters as well. I suppose Bridges did that earlier in his career but after a certain point he really got boxed in to gravelly/quirky tough guy persona.
