Much loved by some but maybe somewhat underachieving in his career to others - Oscar winner and 2X nominee and 1 X Emmy nominee also. Del Toro is 53 now........should he have more success under his belt or is he in perfectly fine shape with how his career has progressed? I have to say personally I like him almost solely because he's a wildcard actor - you never know what you're going to get and that's exciting. Is he under-nominated? Fave performances?

I'm inclined to say underrated. This is a man who has a staggering amount of range and versatility, who has managed to give performances of equal power and skill in two separate languages, who has played heroes and villains and everything in between. This is a guy who can project sleaziness, sensitivity, machismo and brutality, sometimes in the course of the same scene. I think his Oscar win is one of the weaker examples of his skill set as an actor, but he's the only real reason to ever watch that movie, so I suppose I can't complain too much about it. But the thing about Benicio is he is always on, and always watchable. Put him up against the purported greats of his generation and he'll match them pound for pound.

Underrated. Joaquin is amazing in Gladiator, but the fact that so many people act like he was robbed when Benicio was simply the best of the nominees (and one of the greatest soulful performances in cinema history) shows how disrespected he is in some circles. Benicio is underrated and underutilized.

I'll say Just Right. Everyone loves him as he ought to be, right?

Just right, despite his sorta odd career, where he's a prominent actor yet so frequently is put into minor almost throwaway roles.

I'd say he's very underrated. I give him 3 win in BSA (Traffic, 21 Grams, Sicario), he's terrific and has great presence.

Underrated and cruely underused lately.

Just right.
About 15 years ago I thought he would become a major movie star: Traffic, 21 Grams, Che, The Pledge, Usual Suspects. Turned out that, despite his great talent, he started choosing all the wrong roles since then. Or at least, he wasn't offered the right ones.
Yes, he was really fine in Sicario but that was his only very good film in the last 15 years or so (not counting his small and foolish roles in Guardians and Star Wars).

He’s so wonderful in Inherent Vice (“You’re gonna kick him? That’s assault.”)

He has a deserved Oscar, a deserved nom (even if the placing as supporting is debatable), and should have been nominated for Sicario, but he has no other noms I'd give him, and he seems to not be great at choosing roles (or at least doesn't have that much offers), so I'll say just right.
