Let's go back and try to determine which films would have filled out the field of 10 Best Picture nominees. For years with 9 nominees, you can only select 1 option. For years with 5, you will be able to select 5 options. Some years will be more obvious than others and some will have more options. This isn't based on personal preferences. These are realistic options based on acclaim, precursor support and other Oscar nominations. There are a few strong options this year.
A Separation - 2 Oscar noms Albert Nobbs - 3 Oscar noms
Bridesmaids - 2 Oscar noms, SAG, PGA, GG, 2 BAFTA noms Drive - 1 Oscar nom The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo -5 Oscar noms, PGA, DGA, 2 BAFTA noms
The Ides of March - 1 Oscar nom, PGA, GG, 2 BAFTA noms The Iron Lady - 2 Oscar noms
My Week with Marilyn - 2 Oscar noms, 6 BAFTA noms
Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy - 3 Oscar noms, 11 BAFTA noms
Previous results2019 - Knives Out (22 votes). 2018 - If Beale Street Could Talk (18 votes) and Cold War (14 votes) 2017 - I, Tonya (20 votes) 2016 - Jackie (15 votes) 2015 - Carol (25 votes) and Inside Out (14 votes) 2014 - Foxcatcher (22 votes) and Wild (12 votes) 2013 - Blue Jasmine (22 of 24 votes)! 2012 - Skyfall (15 votes)

Voted for Drive because it damn well should've been, but it was probably The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Dunno really but it would be awesome if it had been Tinker Tailor Soldier Soy.

between Dragon Tattoo and Tinker Tailor but I'll default to the one with the PGA and DGA nods... Dragon Tattoo.
Although without looking at the list of noms my automatic assumption would be Tinker Tailor. I was surprised it missed back in 2011 and even more now that I see it really only scored with the BAFTAs. It's such a great movie and it feels like the kind of thing that should've been a big player, moreso than Dragon Tattoo which was quite edgy in 2011. I guess the plot was just too confusing for American voters? In any case, they're both great and both deserved BP nominations.

I really couldn't see it being Girl with a Dragon Tattoo. It just doesn't really feel substantial enough, and it didn't when it came out either. It stood out in the categories it was nominated in, but not beyond that. Even then, I honestly feel like it was kind of just riding Fincher's Social Network wave. For me, the movie was Rooney Mara.
I go with A Separation-- it feels like much more of a standout movie from the year. It splashed like few foreign films do, and like none from the Middle East ever before.
