Brando, Von Sydow, Newman. Considered Burton and Heston for Newman's third spot. This is a slight drop off from the two decades that preceded it but still a really good group.
Glad you are doing these again. Can't wait for the 20's actresses with all those big stars.
EDIT- Missed Peter Sellers the first time. He takes the third spot from Newman.

Brando of course. Arguably best actor ever. Esp. his 50s work was phenomenal.
(A pity Monty Clift died very early and his career was so much affected by his passions. He could have been one of the greatest...)

Great bunch of actors. The three best listed for me are Marcello Mastroianni, Richard Burton and Toshiro Mifune. I also want to give a honorable mention to the great Yves Montand.

Well this is an astonishing and diverse group because it's filled with American film icons ( Brando, Clift, Lemmon, Newman), guys whose career didn't match their talent ( Burton, Scott), 3 of the only 9 male Triple Crown winners EVER ( Scofield, Robards, Plummer)........and a guy who was so uniquely talented he's hard to compare to anyone ever ( Sellers) I'll say Brando who was my all time #1 in our GOAT poll and come back on the others - I haven't even gotten to Mastroianni, Mifune and Von Sydow who were of course Godlike. I really love these polls - not only is it a great idea, and very hard to do.......- THIS is like almost a shorthand personal pacinoyes GOAT list! Best Actor born in the 1970s: Joaquin Phoenix Best Actor born in the 1960s: Philip Seymour Hoffman Best Actor born in the 1950s: Daniel Day-Lewis Best Actor born in the 1940s: Al Pacino, Robert De Niro Best Actor Born in the 1930s: Jack Nicholson, Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman

To quote legendary producer Scott Rudin when discussing whom he considered the three greatest American actors in history:
"There is Brando, George C Scott and Denzel Washington"
It's up for discussion, but one can see Rudin's point. On this poll, Brando (because even though he could be unwatchable at times at his most indulgent, his influence was monumental) and Scott feel like a solid top two to me.

Vittorio Gassman should be in the list as well. I'd add Alberto Sordi too.

Vittorio Gassman should be in the list as well. I'd add Alberto Sordi too. I recently watched Mafioso (reviewed in the Classic Movies thread) - which I had never seen before and he's so great in this role - funny, guileless, deeply moving and best of all nothing is forced at all.......this movie wouldn't work without having a really great comedic actor who also has dramatic chops........it's marvelous work and not many guys would balance it like Sordi is able to and there's nothing show-off about it either.

Brando, Mastroianni, Scott. But this is a deep list full of amazing actors. Some foreign omissions, biggest of them all, The Tragedy King himself, the incomparable Dilip Kumar who is still alive at 97 years old.
