We've speculated who the potentially dominant female star of the 2020's is going to be, and Zendaya is really starting to look like one of the strongest candidates out the gate. Has a strong following from her time as a child/teen Disney star, and just became the youngest woman to win the Best Actress In A Drama Emmy for Euphoria. With projects like this Ronnie Spector film, an Oscar probably isn't too far out of reach. She basically has everything neccesary to be a huge star with audiences as well as an awards favorite.

Good for her. She had a scene in Euphoria worthy of Leo vs. Bracco in the doorway in The Basketball Diaries. Deserved win. Kathryn Newton deserved an Emmy nomination too for The Society, where she's awesome; I'm not even sure Zendaya was better.

You think Zendaya has the potential to be as big as Jennifer Lawrence was for the first half of the 2010's? Everything seems to be lining up in her favor right now to be pushed as the "It" female star.

I don't know if Zendaya will attain Jennifer Lawrence levels, but with an Emmy under her belt already and several major roles in indies and blockbusters alike aligning, she's setting herself up quite nicely. The Ronnie Spector project could go either way (I will be very interested to see who plays Phil), but Zendaya has an impressive resume already.

As long as it's not Al Pacino doing a reprise of that role. The age difference would be grim I dunno...just from a physical perspective, I can see someone like Paul Dano as Phil Spector (particularly in the 60's)

Hmmmmmm........well if it gets Spector's lovely cover of "You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory" - with Joey Ramone - some Johnny Thunders love I'm all for it since getting a worthy Thunders biopic seems completely out of the question these days..... A lot of that more modern stuff is part of her story in that Tina Turner triumphant way - if you make it all about Phil & Ronnie & the 60s it's only half of the story .....or maybe a little more than half.....

Russell for a few years backing her, where she was constantly in the awards conversation while simultaneously being the lead of a big franchise and a supporting character in an even bigger franchise (X-Men). It'd be like if Dune was a triumph, that quarantine thing with JDW is strong, this project works out well, and like four other things all go swimmingly. It was anomalous even at the time, IMO, which is why the crash for J-Law happened. But I think Zendaya could be a much starrier version of Michelle Williams if she really commits to acting and doesn't rest on her early success.

I don't think it's quite as anomalous as you suggest, though I agree it won't be easy. The industry has a tendency to handpick starlets like J-Law and give them every possible opportunity to become as huge a star as possible (they kind of did it with Anne Hathaway as well a few years before J-Law, but people started turning on her during her Oscar campaign for Les Miserables). I wouldn't be remotely surprised if one of the major studios like Disney right now is trying to create or buy some potentially franchise level property where they can place Zendaya front and centre. And with the Emmy, awards-bait producers and filmmakers will be trying to get her to sign to a tonne of would-be Oscarbaits.

I like her and I believe she has the potential to shine in the 20s. Having said that, I don't get why anyone who's making any biopic is automatically discussed as a potential Oscar nominee...

Zendaya just became the youngest woman to ever win the Best Actress In A Drama Emmy. Her stock as an "awards" level credible actress is currently sky high because of this . Combine that with the fact that AMPAS loves giving hot young starlets the Best actress prize AND they like giving Oscars for biopics....discussing her as a potential Oscar nominee really isn't much of a stretch or a leap. It's not just because it's a biopic. That's just one factor. The awards heat Zendaya has because of her recent Emmy win makes considering this a serious potential Oscar play just basic common sense. Depending on how they fill out the director/cast, Zendaya might even end up being seen as a frontrunner when the season for this comes up.

pupdurcs tho. I'm not disagreeing with your points, but to state the obvious here - aren't you forgetting that she's black? Gonna be kinda hard to be a Jennifer Lawrence 2.0 when you're black. Don't think there's even one example of a black actress that's the equivalent of Lawrence.
of course she can win an Oscar for this. But will she win one and then just quickly go away?
Again, not being totally insensitive. I think Zendaya is like an Emma Stone 2.0 and has IT, and she deserves Hathaway's attention from 2008-2012 because she could've played every part she did better, if only the roles were race neutral.
And.... last bit I'll add here is........ she is pretty attractive.

It's a fair observation you are making, but Zendaya is mixed race and light skinned. She won't be limited in opportunities as a "hot young starlet" in the same way a dark skinned, fully black woman like say Lupita N'yongo has been (and even Lupita's career is doing much better than people expected after her Oscar win, headling hits like Us). Colorism is a real thing for black women in Hollywood (less so for black men). As a light skinned mixed race woman, Zendaya is very often cast in roles that would usually go to a white actress, because the presumption is that white audiences would be much more comfortable with her in certain roles than someone who looked like Lupita. Her role in Spider-Man is white in the comics. Her role in Euphoria seems like it would almost certainly have gone to a white actress if the producers didn't decide to cast Zendaya. She is going to get a lot of that. Where white roles are switched up are just to get her in the cast. It's arguably to her advantadge (like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, another mixed race actor ) because she is afforded the opportunity to play both "black" roles and roles that are less race "specific". So I don't think her race will be as much as a limiting factor in becoming Jennifer Lawrence 2.0 as it would be if she was a dark skinned, fully black woman. She ticks the right boxes to appeal to everyone (which is how she was a big Disney star as a kid). Not saying she will get to that level, but if any "black" actress was designed to do it, it's Zendaya.

I think Zendaya is an absolutely horrid actress with no screen presence but unfortunately her undeserved Emmy win cemented her as someone Hollywood will never give up on. I can see her winning (an undeserved) Oscar and possibly being the first black woman to win lead actress after Halle Berry unless Davis beats her to it, which isn't unlikely.

Almost every well known actor or actress making a biopic is considered a possible Oscar nominee. And in the past few years, some of them actually win the award: Malek, Zellweger, Oldman... Just this year, many of them were nominees: Renee (win), Pacino and Pesci, Hopkins and Pryce, Theron if I'm not mistaken... Want to go to the Oscars? Just play a real person!!

I did not mention her winning for this film, just that that she's on that career trajectory (that echoes Berry's in many ways) with an (imo undeserved) Emmy win, bunch of blockbuster roles and award baity projects that will make her impossible to ignore. Of course it's a wild and empty statement to say that a distant win is either deserved or undeserved, but when is that anything new on this board? But given that I've found her success to be wildly unearned so far, it's not a stretch to think the same of a hypothetical win in the future. That is all. I personally think this film sounds interesting and I do hope she will do a good job and actually be worthy of the praise she's gotten in her career so far.

Even if one believed the notion that Zendaya isn't worthy of "opportunities" (I don't. At this stage, she's clearly a more than solid actress that enough people find appealing to watch), it's pretty standard practice for this industry to find extremely attractive people who can't really act for shit, then give them endless opportunities, till they develop a very strong level of acting capability based on those endless chances and repetition. Look at some the early work of Brad Pitt and Charlize Theron, now two of the more respected film actors in the industry and Oscar winners. I would consider both of them out and out bad actors when they started out. They got endless chances to improve because of their stunning looks, not their skill. But they came good. That's how it often goes. Zendaya is already far more capable than Pitt and Theron were at similar stages in their careers. Complaining that Zendaya isn't yet Meryl Streep or whatever seems to be missing entirely the point about how the star system works. You can also add Kristen Stewart ( a charisma vacuum that critics now adore because she's competent in the kind of films they like) and Robert Pattinson to the "endless opportunities" list, after many people thinking both of them sucked as actors in the Twilight movies.

Yeah, I decided to give Euphoria a chance after she won the Emmy and nope. Solid effort but she’s miscast, and the whole thing just reeks of teen star desperately trying to shed their wholesome image. She’s boring on screen and can’t carry the show, she’s upstaged by several supporting performances imo. I haven’t seen enough to fully judge her as a performer, but her win for this was pretty outrageous. Good for her on doing so well post-Disney, it’s harder than most would imagine and there aren’t many who successfully transition.
