Greatest Jake Gyllenhaal performance ever (until now)?
Vote and comment.

An insanely overrated actor in the dying IMDB days iirc........... and now that his career has cooled a little he's assessed more accurately on MAR imo........he's been great 1 time on film - ONE - Nightcrawler........and he's been just ok on stage too when I've seen him ......he's been good a lot in film on the plus side though............. although I never understood how being "good" a lot ever makes you a great actor....it must have something to do with actors needing to be "consistent" which doesn't come into being a great actor either but people bring it up in every poll anyway

An incredibly talented actor. People tend to forget he is not even yet 40 years old. To have the body of work he has amassed to this point is hugely, hugely impressive. He's had a few stumbles and isn't afraid to do weird experiments (ie Okja), but when you realise he hasn't even hit that sweet spot age when actors start hitting their prime and getting their strongest roles (the last decade for people like Bale and DiCaprio) Gyllenhaal is still potentially the greatest of his generation. Just based on potential and what he's done so far at a younger age, I feel like his ceiling his higher than the generation directly ahead of him in Bale, DiCaprio and Phoenix, who are all several years older than him.
I guess Nightcrawler is his best performance so far, but I'm pretty sure he has something better in him. But from things like Source Code, Prisoners to Brokeback Mountain to even Spider-Man: Far From Home, he continues to stand out as arguably the most dynamic and talented actor in his age group.

Nightcrawler is his crown jewel, and is legitimately in the conversation for a top five leading performance of that decade. He's been very good elsewhere (shout-out to Zodiac, where he's always been unfairly maligned), but he's never come close to touching his work as Lou Bloom before or since.

Yeah, Nightcrawler probably. But I'm not a fan. At all.

Honestly, if I didn't consider him something of a category fraud (the guy was a lead), he'd have been my supporting actor win for Brokeback Mountain. As it is, I give the win to Matt Dillon for CrashThe guy has been so consistently strong from such a young age, that I think he's actually taken for granted. I was shocked how good he was in Spider-Man: Far From Home, when I just figured he'd put in a throwaway performance for some sweet Marvel money. But he rarely ever does that. His commitment is impressive.

I think Gyllenhaal is the most underrated major actor working today.
He should be considered as one of the greatest living actors working today, alongside the usual suspects (DiCaprio, Bale, Phoenix,Fassbender, etc..)

He's younger than all those guys (and I feel like people are mostly over Fassbender, and his time may have come and gone). I think he's got plenty of time to get his full plaudits and recognition. I'll be surprised if he's not an Oscar winner in the next decade.

Nightcrawler, easily. He's good, of course, but insanely overrated here.

Nightcrawler, which he should have won BA for. Still infuriating that he didn’t even get nominated.

1. Nightcrawler
2. Love & Other Drugs
3. Brothers/Donnie Darko/October Sky
Great actor, but he's fucking up his rhythm by being so cavalier about choosing projects. It's like he doesn't much care who the director is anymore, which seems naïve for someone who ascended by mostly working with consistently strong directors.

Legitimately a top three turn from him. Wish he'd won the Emmy for it.

Between Prisoners and Stronger, leaning towards Prisoners.
My opinion's definitely shifted on Gyllenhaal from where it was three years ago. I like him quite a bit these days in fact, but I'm still gonna diedie on the hill that the Nightcrawler perf is too much of a caricature, and not a fun one like his delightfully campy art critic in Velvet Buzzsaw. It's not too unlike Phoenix's turn in Joker which itself is half-great and half-terrible and utterly off the rails. Lou Bloom is in a similar position; both too over the top and too on the nose. You never really buy him as a real person, at least I didn't... it's campy without acknowledging its campiness.

I'm partial towards his work in "Prisoners" myself. Did you notice his excessive blinking in the role? I've talked to a few people who didn't pick up on it which I find fascinating. Interesting character trait.

Interesting character trait. Absolutely! That's one of my favorite things about the performance actually, especially how natural it felt as opposed to being a showoffy tick.

Interesting character trait. looking back I can see how some would find it distracting but I genuinely thought it was real back in 2013, like this was just a tick Gyllenhaal had that I didn't bother checking into until 2-ish years ago. Agree with Jango that it's a credit to how naturally he incorporates it into the perf. I love the decision. Makes the character kind of endearing.

Donnie Darko, where he has to manage the most emotional and deep role and does this very good.
