Regina King just won her fourth Emmy in 5 years (each for a different role, which makes the feat more astounding) for her superlative performance in Watchmen. In that period of time, she also won her first Oscar for If Beale Street Could Talk. King had long been a talented, if undervalued character actress in a career spanning 30+ years. But her evolution from underrated industry stalwart into one of the elite and truly great screen actresses in the world today, who can carry a major project on her back with ease has been something to behold. Just shows what is possible when you give talented people the opportunities. She's very much someone I can see winning a second acting Oscar, perhaps in the lead category. Shame she doesn't do stage (I'd rate her even more then), but I've read that she may be willing to take on the challenge.
As a film actress, she's lacking much in the way of substantial lead roles. That needs to change, and I believe it will. Excited at the prospect of her being allowed to carry movies.

She's definitely cemented herself as a force to be reckoned with, and I definitely see her being able to get some regular attention from the Academy if she continues to work at her current pace. I'm still pretty underwhelmed by her Oscar win, though -- I found her storyline to be the weak point of an otherwise lovely movie, and while her work in it isn't bad, it feels the most out of place.

I feel it's almost guaranteed at this point that Denzel Washington will cast her in one of the August Wilson cycle of plays that he's producing as films. She could have done Ma Rainy's Black Bottom, but obviously he cast Viola Davis instead. But she is getting up there with Davis in terms of industry stature. I've mentioned it before, but I think Washington and King would make a dream pairing, particularly in a romantic drama ala The Bridges Of Madison County. Both of them generate easy chemistry with everyone (the chemistry King had with Don Johnson, even for an episode and a half of Watchmen is testament to that).

Not to mention One Night in Miami looks poised to be a hit for her as a director. Really excited for that.

Obviously awesome stuff, but I more wanted to focus on her career as an actor, which is why I didn't mention it. Having said that, her success as a director will likely impact her opportunites as an actor. She is truly an A-list star now in terms of prestige, and being an acclaimed (possibly even Oscar nominated) director will help her get projects greenlit with her in them.

I remember her in things like Jerry Maguire (lowkey she's one of the best things about it), and as Will Smith's wife in Enemy of the State, and even then I always thought her of a stalwart underrated actress, mostly held back by her race (Hollywood is especially brutal to women of color). I'm so glad to see her get so much appreciation lately, especially since she's been kicking it out of the park in things like Watchmen and If Beale Street Could Talk. I was also amazed to learn recently she's been acting since she was a teenager.
In regards to her and Washington, I'm honestly surprised she never played a wife or love-interest in a later day thriller of his. I mean he worked with a lot of the big supporting AA actresses of the time. She would have been perfect for something like Sanaa Lathan's role in Out of Time for example.

Denzel Washington had a sideline in trying to help boost the careers of black actresses in Hollywood by getting them cast in his films (often as love interests, but sometimes as just supporting roles). With Jerry Maguire and Enemy Of The State, King already had huge exposure in those kind of mainstream projects. Washington usually helped cast those black actresses who never had that kind of mainstream exposure. Like Sanaa Lathan in Out Of Time, whose biggest roles up to that point were in projects marketed directly to African-Americans. Or Kimberly Elise in John Q and The Manchurian Candidate. Or Viola Davis in Antwone Fisher.I guess a lot of black actresses needed a hand, and maybe he saw Regina already had the kind of exposure that he was helping others with.

He's generally very good at having his love interests be some struggling young black actress, which helps his standing in the AA community, while also juggling his more broad "crossover appeal". Regina King probably didn't need the help or work, she was certainly well-employed by TV, and sometimes even played sassy sidekicks to bigger actresses. I just think they would have would great together, even if she was playing a supportive wife or something.

Honestly she should've been the next big thing after going toe-to-toe with Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding Jr in Jerry Maguire (both at the top of their games at the time) and really holding her own. I'm glad the industry is coming around to her as a major talent in the industry. If she even attempts stage that would be a good kudos to her, much less succeeds. I also agree that her and Washington should do a romantic drama or romantic comedy type movie. They both have underrated comedy timing as well. Happy for her success. She's been in the game a long time.

I haven't seen much of these Emmy wins but it's surely very impressive. Regina King has always been "there", she was in Boyz n the Hood and Friday and it's true that after Jerry Maguire she would have deserved more attention and roles but better late than never. As I have said, I haven't seen much of her TV stuff but I'm glad I watched Southland, that's a brillant cop TV show, one of the best.

And she's not even that talented...
She should have never won that Oscar for Beale Street (a movie no one saw). Weisz, Adams, and De Tavira were all more deserving.
