I think we had that poll before. Or something like that.
Hoffa for me.

Hmmmmmm...... I don't think this is a good matchup actually - Pacino was 79, and approaching the Sweet Embrace of Death, Washington was ~61 and Death has now just entered into his career that he's turned 65. Fences is a lead ......so a closer matchup might be Angels in America (closer in age) or YDK Jack (a clear lead) maybe...... I lean Washington here ............ Fences is his 2nd best performance ever, from a guy who tbh doesn't have nearly as many "great" ones as people seem to think he does - and when I saw it onstage too in the IMDB days I said as much ........so how about giving pacinoyes credit for something once in a while people yanno? There's no pleasing you judgmental savages!!! The Irishman does makes Pacino's unfuckwithable all time top 10 for me......... but it's around 10th. Now, I do LIKE The Irishman portrayal more, partially because his Fences character doesn't resolve himself in a great way as it is written in the play.......but that's a different question when comparing the performances........... I mean Washington can't rewrite his play and I've seen the play a lot and it always feel Troy's arc is sketchy at the end.

Fences.
That was pretty easy. Oddly random comparison as well. Pacino gave the second best supporting actor performance in his movie. Washington gave a lead performance that should have won him the Oscar.

Maybe I should have put Angels in America or The Merchant of Venice, since Pacino was respectively 63 and 64 years old when they came out, and Washington was around 62 when Fences came out.
But maybe I wrongly assumed lesser people watched them compared to Fences, so The Irishman felt a better comparison.

Yeah, not a very good comparison here.
On the other hand, AiA and YDKJ were tv movies, not theatrical and MoV is Shakespeare and, you know, a Shakespeare play are really comparable only with other Shakespeare plays.

I voted for Washington. Pacino's very strong in The Irishman, but Denzel is doing some powerhouse work in Fences, I'm still shocked everytime I revisit it, and I see him looking so old and angry, he's like a completely different person. I agree that comparing the two performances is very strange, though.

Pacino's really good and is one of the few saving graces of that turgid mess of a film, but Denzel takes this quite easily.

for a board that loves Pacino/Scorsese so much, I'll always be amazed how Pacino's perf which is the best he's done in three decades got lowkey divisive.
as for this matchup specifically, I like Washington a lot but this belongs to Pacino.

I think it's one of his worst.

I know you're new but trust me this board has its quirks ..........some people dislike Taxi Driver.........me myself I have some problems with Goodfellas.........and hey you know some people can't stand ..........Casey Affleck. Regardless......... enjoy every sandwich ..........and of course.........the ice cream.

Washington but Pacino was about the only thing I liked in The Irishman.
