It might get some techs but nothing in the big categories. I'd support a nod for effects but that's it.

I'd be shocked for any Nolan film to be shut out completely but I doubt it'll be a BP contender based on the feedback (like Interstellar I think most just find it too confusing). But tech noms are always in the stars, the question is how many. Sound is always a good bet. Every Nolan film since TDK (minus TDKR) has been nominated for sound.

I didn't have a problem with the sound, but it will be interesting to see what happens with the controversy there. Has there been any word on what the actual sound industry guys think about it?

No clue, but Nolan's mixing has always been murky and that hasn't stopped TDK and his 2010s films (minus TDKR) from getting in. And the fact that there's only one sound category now presumably won't matter because all of his films that have been nominated for sound have been nominated in both categories. Now, I haven't seen it yet soooo... who knows. I remember the narrative surrounding TDKR's sound was that the mixing was messy and the same narrative has been going on with Tenet too so maybe it'll miss after all. I didn't get a sense of the VFX from the trailers. Is it really good?

The controversy here seems considerably bigger than his other movies with many people complaining of getting headaches from the film and that dialogue is inaudible. Again, I didn't have any of those issues, but I find it getting a sound nod a little hard to believe considering that is such a big narrative around the film. I was not big on the movie overall but I liked the FX a lot. The "inversion" effects were cool especially since they were done practically.

Here's an article from Variety that includes commentary from people in the industry, though one of them was a sound designer for Dunkirk, so maybe not the most objective perspective...

Some techs for sure. Sound, editing, fx, music...
As for BP, I dunno. Maybe all things considered (Tenet being the "back to cinema" movie, other films being pushed back in 2021 etc) it gets a nod.
It's Nolan after all.

Probably just nominations in the Techs. Although a nom for Original Song for Travis Scott's The Plan would be dope. SKRRT, SKRRT

I'll second all those who say it'll receive only tech nominations, especially in the sound and visual category. Reviews are not as enthusiastic as Inception or Dunkirk, and they're more on par with Interstellar then anything. Hard to see it getting a best picture nominee unless the category is especially weak this year (it's still possible, I suppose).

I saw the movie twice. Second viewing only made it worse. Still, I'd be absolutely thrilled if it not only was nominated for but also won Best VFX (unless Dune somehow stays within the cutoff), because those inversion scenes were jaw-dropping, totally original, purely cinematic, and truly awe-inspiring in that the majority was captured in-camera. Really disliked the movie, but VFX would be a great way to honor its best attribute on Oscar night. I'd be shocked if it got any above-line noms, and honestly a Rises style shutout wouldn't surprise me.

It's the best film of the year so far, but it'll just get techs. People try to be fake-smart about Nolan, and Tenet looks likely to be ignored.

Are we having a ceremony this year or is it 2022? Cause if it’s 2022, I wonder if it will be forgotten at that point.
Anyway at best I see maybe some tech noms.
Sound(editing makes sense, but not mixing, but I guess it’s the same category now) Visual Effects
That’s it. It’s well shot, but once again I wonder if it will be forgotten.

Yeah, I guess it's gonna get a bunch of tech nods but will be snubbed for BP. Although we're looking at a very weird and empty year big movie-wise so who knows. But I'm betting it'll be more of an Interstellar than an Inception at the Oscars.
That being said, having finally seen the movie myself, I think it deserves much more than it's probably gonna get.
