Nothing against Close, but Spacek is just better.
Advantage goes to the one who can play an old period Southern girl with a heart of gold, which is clearly Sissy.
Close has things like The World According to Garp, The Natural, 101 Dalmatians (much better than Streep at the same kinda role), and in Damages which I think is the culmination of her career, and of her strengths. The cold stoning cruel and viperous villain. If it were a film, it would easily be my winner in the year it was released. Don't much care for her other acclaimed stuff.
I like both, but it's Sissy for me....
'73: Lead Actress - Badlands '77: Supporting Actress - 3 Women '81: Lead Actress - Raggedy Man
'82: Supporting Actress - The World According to Garp '84: Supporting Actress - The Natural
And I already said Damages is my favorite thing she (or either) has done in either medium
Lange and Streep feel like they could swap all of their roles, really. And Close would do it better.
I'm gonna ignore this statement. Still.....
Close could do most anything Streep can outside of Sophie's Choice. Streep could do The Natural or 101 Dalmatians or what I saw of Damages. As far as I'm concerned, the vast majority of actors (Streep and Close definitely among them) are interchangeable tools for the director's canvas, anyway.
