Trying to think more broadly rather than views limited to this board or “film twitter”. This isn’t really to debate how great he is overall but as time goes on what roles will DDL be remembered for? Like if he came up at a party what would the general consensus be?
I think Gangs of New York and There Will Be Blood are clearly ahead and separated from the rest.
After that I think there are really only three in the conversation, Last of the Mohicans, Lincoln, and Phantom Thread. I’d put LOTM at the top of that list and say it will be remembered as an iconic role for him. I think Phantom Thread is too divisive and while will continue to be highly regarded by cinephiles, won’t be acknowledged by the general public. That leaves Lincoln which is really a toss up for me. I have no idea how his performance will be remembered but I can see it going either way.
So overall I’m going with 3 iconic roles with a possible 4th.

Like if he came up at a party what would the general consensus be?TWBB, GONY, Lincoln (I don't know why Lincoln tbh but it is)...........that's 3 iconic out of ~19 roles. This board is goofy in how it presents popularity as either necessary or a barrier to greatness - all actors basically get remembered for 5 or 6 roles (including him, add his other 3 nods and that's his 6). Not too shabby ........he's not the GOAT to me, but he's in the discussion for it, a top 10 all-timer imo. I think of it like this: I rank Finney above DDL personally in any list - US/UK combined or UK only - and Finney maybe doesn't have any "iconic" ones at all (arguable)....... it's just the work that matters itself and the advocacy you can make for that work.

There Will Be Blood, Gangs of New York and Lincoln for sure. Probably also Last of the Mohicans as well.
My Left Foot isn't quite as widely seen, but it is still remembered as a paragon of film acting and often cited as being one of the greats, even if it's not quite as mainstream (and even then, for a tiny Irish film to have the success it had, it's still remarkable that it has endured as much as it has in the sphere that it's in).
The Crucible is seen regularly in classrooms, so there's an argument for that as well, even if I don't necessarily subscribe to it.

Last of the Mohicans and GONY for sure. Maybe TWBB also.
But in my book, his Hawkeye is a legendary character.

In the real world, probably only Gangs Of New York.
There Will Be Blood is his biggest deal with film buffs, but I don't see it as something that has as much replay value with casuals as GONY. That's a performance that will be kept alive by cinephiles and film critics good graces.

There Will Be Blood and I guess Lincoln kind of by default. He won an Oscar for playing Abraham Lincoln in a Spielberg movie. The Letterboxd/Film Twitter crowd don't think it's the hippest thing but the GP is going to remember it more than Phantom Thread or any of his older stuff like it or not.
That's it. Iconic gets way overused these days. The overwhelming majority of actors don't have any.

I don’t think he has any “iconic” roles - he just isn’t that kind of actor/film star.

There Will Be Blood is an iconic movie, but I don’t think DDL’s role is seem as iconic despite being regarded as an all-time great. And to be honest, I never see GONY being mentioned outside this board, let alone his character.
Lincoln is definetly his capital I Iconic role. Then I think My Left Foot that is seen a lot in classrooms and Phantom Thread, because his character being funny and quotable has left a mark in its audiences imo

Snarky observation: Actually isn't his " most iconic role" the creation of "The "Legend" of Daniel Day Lewis" ?..........That role he cultivated, refined, carefully orchestrated and played to the hilt ................and who in, you know, the real fncking world, only had about ~6 "great" performances and somehow bluffed his way on to wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too many "GOAT" lists for people who should know better as "the number 1 best actor ever"?

Bro, we get it, you disagree with this board on pretty much everything. A jab here and there is snark, making "joke" comments about how you find (insert film/music opinion here) absurd everyday is an old bit. Let people like shit, damn.

You don't have to change the way you post, I'm recommending you get some new material. Because I like you, but the whole bit where you whine that someone holds an actor you find great at an even greater esteem ("how dare you call a top-15 actor the GOAT?!") is getting into hack territory. And despite your age, I don't wanna see you age into a hack.

I like me and my sense of humor a whole lot more............ and one man's sense of humor............ is another man's hackery I guess. I have called Denzel Washington a top 15 (American) film actor and if it bothers you (?) when I say it........... then I hope you would do what everyone else does on message boards daily - either engage in dialog with me about my post.................. or just ignore my post and move on.......or block me (though I would prefer one of the first 2 rather than that). See you on the boards.........
