I have made fun of both of these guys (a lot, too much? ) for being flame outs imo but they clearly had special and celebrated runs - Crowe 91-01 for me (others start him later and extend his run further) and Norton 96-Ymmv.......both 3 time Oscar nominees, Crowe a winner. Big followings on this board and they've never been compared - Norton is 51 and Crowe 56.

No comparison here, Norton. Way more talented.

For me Crowe hit higher highs, but I had to vote for Norton because I find Crowe really inconsistent after his peak whereas Norton is usually reliable.

Before Saturday, I would've said Norton. Now I say Crowe. He deserved two Oscars with few competitive equals. For The Insider and A Beautiful Mind. Maybe hes slightly tied for A Beautiful Mind (not with Denzel) but point is hes either superb or irrelevant (like everything else hes done). Norton might've deserved it for American History X but harder to say with a much stronger category.....McKellen, Hanks, and Carrey might claim a piece of the prize. I guess Norton has a couple of other things I like but not love, but on the strength of The Insider and A Beautiful Mind....its hard to deny Crowe was THE Hollywood actor from 1999-2001...basically the years my mind tends to want to live in the most (well 1999-2003, but close enough ). Where did he go after that? No idea. ......... TerryMontana - I simply saw A Beautiful Mind again. Liked the movie, Crowe, and Connelly even more this time. Instantly reminded of how great he used to be.

Edward Norton is an actor that showed great promise and didn't quite deliver. Russell Crowe actually delivered on his promise, at least for a decade. This goes to Crowe, and quite comfortably.

Nothing against Crowe but Norton has given the world a couple all timers in Primal Fear and AHX. Crowe is of course always good and deserved his win for Gladiator but he has never reached those kinds of highs.

Love em both but its Norton by a hair as I have enjoyed more of his performances than what Crowe has given us.
On a sidenote, I noticed that both of them have played a white supremacist. (Romper Stomper for Crowe & American History X for Norton).

Crowe. His peak was stronger (despite Norton being tremendous), and he's retained more of his gift. Crowe has become cavalier about his choices, but I think the strong actor is still there (I was impressed by his work in The Loudest Voice, personally). Norton seems somewhat wilted.

After seeing Glass Onion, Crowe by far. Norton is washed.

After seeing Glass Onion, Crowe by far. Norton is washed. I don't agree about Norton being washed, but I actually think Crowe would be great in the Knives Out universe.

It's Norton, and it's not even remotely close. Crowe never really impressed me, outside of Gladiator. Norton, on the other hand, has Primal Fear, American History X, Fight Club, 25th Hour, Birdman...

Edward Norton is an actor that showed great promise and didn't quite deliver. Russell Crowe actually delivered on his promise, at least for a decade. This goes to Crowe, and quite comfortably. Pretty much ^ ...the worst thing that happened to Russell Crowe was turning 38 ......to me he hit the wall awfully young - people love to diss Dustin Hoffman's decline, or Sean Penn's but they were in their 50s and had 2 Oscars before they lost their mojo (and Hoffman had an Emmy and Tony nomination too) .........that's a shocking decline after that '91-'01 run and nothing after he turned 38 is close to "great" imo.......and he ain't getting it back I'm guessing.........and yeah he would like fries with that Norton just never had that far to fall anyway imo......he has a couple great early performances that were somewhat overpraised and he had Birdman which is a huge feather in his cap, a self-mocking, Oscar nodded comic performance when he had 0 notable comic work prior imo and desperately needed that. Found him quite average in Motherless Brooklyn and Glass Onion .......not sure he wants to try acting much these days tbh......

Still going for Crowe. Apart from Fight Club and American History X, there's an unnaturalness in Norton's acting that I don't really enjoy. I find him more distracting than anything in the Wes Anderson movies...the latest entry is Glass Onion.
Movies I've seen: Crowe - Gladiator, Beautiful Mind, Man of Steel, L.A. Confidential, American Gangster, Les Misérables, The Nice Guys, Thor 3, 3:10 to Yuma and Noah Norton - Fight Club, American History X, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Birdman, The Incredible Hulk , The Illusionist, The Italian Job, Moonrise Kingdom, Glass Onion, Painted Veil

It's a good comparison bc they were both consecutively touted as our next best actors..... neither were and neither have much good work outside of their peaks....... kinda even for me..... Norton had more charisma (Rounders etc) but then suddenly did not..... but Crowe wins by a smidge simply bc his bests are better: The Insider, Romper Stomper, Gladiator.
Looking forward to their next.... Norton's first serious tv role, and Crowe's first horrors (plural!).
