Corbet seems like he's bound to make a great movie and this fits with his other ambitious, interestingly-casted work. I saw him once at the NYFF White Ribbon screening chatting up Haneke who's a bit of a mentor to him I think. And now the Rylance casting. He's got taste. I haven't seen Vox Lux, but Childhood of a Leader while flawed has a really gripping mood to it....

I thought Childhood of a Leader was solid (if a bit on the overrated side), and Vox Lux really goes south in its second half, but Corbet is proving to be nothing but a fascinating and provocative filmmaker, and this premise feels almost Coppola-esque in its ambition. The Standing Man and Marion Cotillard, two of the most powerfully gifted talents working (each of whom could stake a claim at being the most talented of their respective generations), are terrific casting coups, and then you've got skilled actors like Edgerton (a promising lead), de Bankole (who has always deserved more opportunities), and even the likes of Martin and Cassidy . . . this is an ensemble to die for already.

I hope the guy is actually talented. Why invoke greatness you have no real intention of grappling with beyond hand-waving about themes? I really don't like so many of these art-house dudes. Too much fraudulence at heart. It'll be 18 months from now and we're seeing indiewire articles about how the movie isn't "perfect" but it's fascinating, etc. I can't take anymore of that.

I saw that tweet and wondered if it was The Brutalist or another project Corbet was involved in. I really, really hope Rylance hasn't been recast.

You're right, stephen. Rylance is the icing on the cake. Would be a big loss.

You're right, stephen . Rylance is the icing on the cake. Would be a big loss. Edgerton, Cotillard + Rylance were a dream team for me. Rylance is my favourite working actor now that Daniel Day-Lewis has retired, Cotillard is my favourite actress of her generation, and I've always liked Edgerton and been rooting for his big awards breakthrough for a while. I do love Guy Pearce, and I have been known to like and appreciate Brody and Jones, but if they are replacing that original trinity, it would be a massive disappointment for me. Probably the biggest disappointment since the Silence recast.

Oh god, don't remind me of the Silence recasting. Retraumatizing. I remember the day of the Bernal, Del Toro & DDL news like it was yesterday. It was heaven. Brody is an interesting addition. I like the other two too. But Jones has been in so much middling stuff since she became a name, and Pearce is IN so much, I've totally lost oversight. Would definitely be a downgrade. I guess in the next couple of days we might get an official confirmation. So, not all is lost. Bear up stephen!
