I woke up this morning with that fateful quote from Abraham Lincoln in my head: "I suppose it's time to go, though I would rather stay." And it hit me that there has always been something in Chadwick Boseman's work I hadn't quite been able to suss out until just now: a somber prescience, as if he knows not just that he is playing these great icons of history (Jackie Robinson, James Brown, Thurgood Marshall) and cultural landmark roles like Black Panther, but he knew that like them, he wasn't going to be around forever and for him, the end was likely to come sooner than later. So he made them count.
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is still around the corner as his final film (and his role in it is sizable), but if you wanted to talk about strong farewell roles, you really can't ask for a better one than Da 5 Bloods. His performance in it is haunting, even without the benefit of hindsight, and I genuinely think in retrospect, it will be seen as the role that best speaks to his innate power and magnetism.
But no matter if it was T'Challa or Jackie Robinson, James Brown or Thurgood Marshall or Stormin' Norman Holloway, Chadwick Boseman leaves an undeniable and enduring legacy with his all-too-brief career. And it leaves me with another quote in mind: "A candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long, and you have burned so very, very brightly."

This is a really tragic and unexpected lost. At age 43 too. Gone too soon! 😔 He was a great actor and I didn't know that Boseman was battling cancer either. I also found it crazy how he died in the week honoring Jackie Robinson as well. Black Panther was also a groundbreaking movie for his role and beyond. RIP Chadwick Boseman.

We'll find out fairly soon, but Chadwick may end up being the frontrunner for the supporting actor Oscar at the next Oscars for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. He was already seen a strong likely nomination possibility sight unseen, because of the pedigree of the project, the pedigree of the role (it won stage awards and a Tony nomination for Charles Dutton).
Hard to see an actor as good as Chadwick not tearing a role like that up, so he may well be joining Peter Finch and Heath Ledger in that very exclusive club of posthumous Oscar winning actors. Which would be a fitting reward for a great talent.

It would be a great way to pay tribute to him, and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom feels like the kind of movie and part that he would really excel at.

This is the picture right here, to be honest. This is what it's all about.
