A questionable move..........no extension for plays I guess.......a very limited field .........really helps Jake Gyllenhaal who had two plays open in repertory (Sea Wall/A Life - I saw Sea Wall he better not win for THAT) and could steal a Tony and Laura Linney (My Name is Lucy Barton) who could also. Gyllenhaal never nodded and Linney a 4 time nominee.
No announcement on nominations yet. The full list of non-musical plays is below.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play Ian Barford, Linda Vista Andrew Burnap, The Inheritance Jake Gyllenhaal, Sea Wall/A Life Tom Hiddleston, Betrayal Tom Sturridge, Sea Wall/A Life Blair Underwood, A Soldier’s Play
Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play Joaquina Kalukango, Slave Play Laura Linney, My Name is Lucy Barton Audra McDonald, Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune Mary-Louise Parker, The Sound Inside
Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical Aaron Tveit, Moulin Rouge!*
Is this a default win?
No more so than Scott Rudin just paying off the Tony committee with a big check .......
He theoretically could "not win" see bold below...but he will..............the Tony awards are a joke - far worse than the Emmys or Oscars which is really saying something - since at least the mid 90s onward (for all 3 awards actually).
"If the Tony Awards Nominating Committee has determined that if there is only one nominee in a category listed, such category shall be submitted to the Tony Voters which may, by the affirmative vote of sixty (60%) percent of the total ballots cast, grant an Award in that category," a note reads.
