I said earlier in these polls that generally you can't really do this poll if an actor has 5 or more Oscar nods - since generally they can't really be underrated (I think Lange is the only one we did so far with more).....but Jon Voight is close to this: First, a lot of people hate his politics........his estrangement from his daughter .......he emerged in a decade that imo has 5 of the the top 10 American film actors - ever - where it's very easy to be overshadowed........he also was, for a time at least - an awards regular within that esteemed group - not only 4 Oscar nods but 11 Golden Globe nominations in total - TV & Film (which is a large amount). He of course is an Oscar winner as well. So what do you think - underrated because of his era and personal life or overrated because he is of that great class and too often gets lumped into the 1970s group by association .......or just right when you take all of that into account? Fave performances, underrated ones.........he's 81 now - below in his 1970s peak, and in 2019 winning the National Medal of the Arts - the only one Trump has given to an actor in his first term as of now........:

Plus one Bafta win and four Emmy nods.
I consider him one of the best American actors of his generation.
Just right.

One bump - lots of overrated votes which is a little surprising ......

Brilliant in Ray Donovan's first few seasons (although let's be real, Mickey really outstayed his welcome), but I can't say I'm really all that into him aside from that. Overrated.

I'm sort of conflicted. On one hand, I adore his performances in Midnight Cowboy, Deliverance and Coming Home, but on the other, looking at his filmography I realize that I haven't cared for anything he's done post-'78 or haven't seen it (there are a few large gaps). Didn't care for him in Ali. Not that there was anything wrong with it, just that he had so little to do.
But for how much I love that early work, I'll say just right. He really delivered when given the chance to shine as a leading man. At his best he deserved to stand alongside Hoffman, Pacino, and Nicholson in that era. Crazy that he was snubbed for Deliverance, but I guess the win in '78 (totally deserved btw, and actually no one comes close, not even Hoffman) made up for it.

Lot more awards consideration that I realized; overrated. He's been great - Midnight Cowboy, Deliverance, maybe Coming Home, Runaway Train - but I partly think he kinda lucked out with those projects too and needed those costars. I don't think he can carry a movie, he isn't a total leading man, and his character work is hit or miss (Heat a standout there; unimpressed with Ali, The General etc). I only saw the first few season of Ray Donovan but that is a huge boost for him imo, a role that suggests he could have been playing some of those great parts from the '70s guys, or even Walken-ish roles. We get a whole, edged, often funny character there with Mickey; you might hate him one scene, he might win you over the next.
