Alice was one I always turned away from for w/e reason. Then I saw it, surprised it isn't better regarded... Above all, it's a beautiful looking movie. Carlo Di Palma captures the kind of dynamic colors from his '60s heyday and that soft-grain lushness. Woody's blocking is very impressive and he uses props, costumes and set design cleverly - how Mia Farrow's clothes match the bland tans of her home, but outside she is a sticking-out shock of red. Farrow's perf is fevery and funny and wisely doesn't play it too priggish. The whole cast is quite good actually - Joe Mantegna is instantly affectionate, there's a hilarious cameo perf from Bernadette Peters. Woody is more experimental than usual here and at times wondrously, and his script, a surveying of the self/the past, fantasy v reality, a parody of upper-class standards, and the gossip mill, it plays as an interesting piece between Another Woman and Blue Jasmine. Having said that, his other movies on Prime are much, much better. I like Alice.
