Pit Stop (1969) & The Unholy Rollers (1972) - both have under 1k votes on IMDb, both around 90min, both on Prime. Two b-movies for the drive-in crowds from producer Roger Corman. Pit Stop, which puts the Faustian myth into figure-eight racing, is directed by Jack Hill - QT is an avowed fan, and you can sense he’s pulled from it, especially the use of soundtrack. Cool, gritty movie. With a wicked Sid Haig, and Ellen Burstyn in a small role. The Unholy Rollers is much more “exploitation” and almost barbaric with gender cliches, but emerges as feminist by the end actually. It’s also fulllll of Chuck Berry songs and co-edited by Scorsese! Some of the roller derby scenes are edited in a serpentine, striking way.

Two for baseball not often mentioned, both directorial debuts too..... The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings (1976) - the year before John Badham did Saturday Night Fever he made this which is another anti-establishment sports pic except with greater stakes and significance bc it's about the Negro Leagues during segregation. Satchel Paige said "How old would you be if you didn't know how old you was?" Billy Dee Williams stars as Bingo (half inspired by Satchel) with James Earl Jones who is good fun here (and of course later did Field of Dreams and The Sandlot); there's a dare and awareness to them of the matter-of-timeness to their age and situation. Richard Pryor gags it up in the cast too. It's maybe too long a movie and too light for all of its conflicts but it's worth a watch. It came out a few months after my fav baseball pic The Bad News Bears. Fear Strikes Out (1957) - Anthony Perkins is pushed and erupts in this a quite harrowing perf. Karl Malden plays Perkins' vehement father, who dreams for him, creating in the sport a seething resentment with every practice and scrimmage another turning knob toward madness. Peaks during its second act but again very solid movie worth a watch. One more mention for fun, maybe theycallmemrfish Viced have seen? I rewatch this very often, let's pretend it counts as a, um, short documentary....

I watched the Spanish movie Campeones just yesterday. Not a masterpiece, but it's an unusual film about inclusion. Check it if you can.
